A one-day event organised by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, the professional body covering the entire lifecycle of materials, will coincide with the start of the Tour de France. To be held on 6 July 2007 within walking distance of the opening ceremony, Materials in Bicycles will feature big names from the cycling world.
Looking at the bike from a rider’s perspective, Olympic Gold Medallist and world record breaker Chris Boardman will lead a presentation, while designer Mike Burrows, best known for his work on the time trial bicycle ridden by Boardman, will talk on past, present and future designs.
The seminar will also consider manufacturing issues, examining frame materials with specific presentations on the use of composites, magnesium and advanced metallic materials in bike structures. The conference will cover different types of bicycles, including those used in the Tour de France, as well as aspects of cycle helmets.
