At Home with Greg Minnaar

One of the greatest racers of all time won his twentieth World Cup win at Fort William on the weekend, we catch up with the South African legend at home in Pietermarizburg during the off season.

" A friend of mine about three years ago asked me if i remember the school teacher told me to stop dreaming in school, because how am I ever going to earn a living out of riding a bicycle"
"I think when you're pushing through and trying to reach somewhere you'll never really hear the negative stuff around you because you're pushing forward so heavily"
" I dont think I'm smart, no, I think i break things down until they're very basic. I'm always trying to find more efficient ways of doing things"
“ I have always loved two wheels, and I have always enjoyed being on them. I don’t know if just having so much fun as a kid, carving ruts in other people’s gardens, cruising down the street, I don’t know if that built a skill that I didn’t realize I had actually built at the time, and then when I switched from motorcycles to bicycles I had this way of carrying speed, of cornering, that made a successful career? I don’t know.”
“ I think what drove me at the beginning was people saying I wouldn’t be able to do what I thought I was able to do. And that got me into a career where I was able to possibly prove them wrong. And then there was a challenge of trying to stay there, and at the same time, just having such a good time.”
“I think what makes me thrive is family, and I Think that’s what the Syndicate has provided, since joining them nine years ago”
Minnaar has many titles. Three World Cup 01/05/08. The Global Orange is bottom left from 01, the Honda top left from 05 and the Santa Cruz from 08. Bottom right is his Intense from Lugano World Championships 2003 the first of his three rainbow stripes. This season on a fresh bike and on an undoubted upward curve again, the South African goes after Aaron Gwin's four world cup titles and make a dent on Nico Vouiloz's five. Most incredibly Minnaar has wins that now span a MASSIVE seventeen seasons.
