Trail and Enduro Bikes

Evil Insurgent

Before we start, let’s get one thing clear. This bike is gorgeous – probably the most beautiful creation on this list. The frame shape and colours (or lack thereof) are the obvious eye-catchers, but look closely at the integrated chainguide, sinister paintwork and overall build quality.

You can see a lot of love has gone into this bike. When you ride it you get continuous looks of admiration from anyone you pass. It’s a fact that people will buy a bike based on how it looks and you can’t really blame them when you see something like this in the flesh.

If this bike is a fashion accessory though, it’s the kind you’d wear for a Saturday-night-on-the-town, not your Sunday best. Long, low and slack, this bike knows how to party. This is perhaps best illustrated by its geometry settings – low and extra low. After all, who ever uses the ‘high’ settings found on other bikes? You may think this is a “the numbers all go up to eleven” situation, but when the extra low setting has you commanding a 64.8 degree head angle, you start to think they may have named it right.

Of course, all these looks and marketing attitude count for nothing if the bike fails to deliver and you’ll be glad to know the Evil pulls its weight.

The low weight of the bike results in a lively ride, sharp on the pedals and light in your hands. Despite this, it’s among the best in its bracket when it comes to blown out ground, big holes, big roots and horrible rocks. Evil’s new linkage is simply wonderful, the focus on simplicity makes it super-forgiving. A big improvement over Evil encounters we’ve had in the past.

The frame is backed up with a loaded spec. This is one stealthy bike with Guide RSC brakes, Sram X1 gearing and Reverb Stealth from SRAM, while WTB tyres grip the ground and Race Face finish the job on wheels, bar and stem duty. The colour co-ordination is pure and simply faultless.

The silence of this bike used to be whisked away by noisy wheels. The E-Thirteens performed really well and had better bearing life than we’re used to but we always felt like this bike should be silent. The Race Face replacements ensure that it is.

There are downsides though, primarily we’d love a flash of kashima on the front. For our money, the Fox 36 is a shade better than Lyrik supplied here.

Overall though? We really like the feel of this bike, the low swooping frame, the powerful rear suspension character, the banging angles and just the right amount of flex in its bones.
