After the high of the World Cup from Mont Sainte Anne on the weekend, the world of downhill woke up to some tragic news on Monday. legendary mechanic Chris ‘Monkdawg’ Vasquez had tragically passed away.
Monkdawg had been suffering with ill health for a number of months and, despite the mountain bike community raising over $18,000 to help with his care, he died peacefully on August 7 at the age of 46. Monkdawg was a legendary mechanic and has wrenched for the like of Missy Giove, Brian Lopes, Aaron Gwin and Brook MacDonald since he joined the World Cup circuit in 1995.
Vasquez was a much loved figure in the World Cup pits with his ‘Monk Truths’ entertaining and educating many riders. His loss was felt heavily and here are some heart felt tributes from those who knew him best:
