Lazer Revolution helmet

A new kid on the block for enduro helmets

With a first sighting at the 2016 IceBike show, Lazer’s new Revolution helmet promises not only additional protection for the enduro rider but a customisable colour options too. With plenty of competition with this type of product from TroyLee, Giro and Bell to name just a few, how does THis new lid stack up?

Lazer have been off our radar when it comes to trail and enduro helmets and it would be easy to imagine their focus has been on road helmets. With Madison established as the UK distributor for Lazer, and on the heads of the Saracen DH team they have more presence on the trails than a few years ago.

The Revolution is all new, and focused (as always these days) on the enduro rider. So what makes an up-to-date enduro or trail lid then?

Deep coverage at the rear and sides and a stable well-fitting design is a good starting point. Enough ventilation for sustained climbing and a peak that adjusts up far enough with space to park your goggles along with good strap retention are a must too. The weight needs to be light enough to not cause frustration, especially if you’re riding all day.

A ‘Revolution’ in helmet design?

This helmet not only ticks all the above boxes for enduro helmet design and has a good choice of sizes (the large we have at Dirt HQ is a very generous fit) and 22 vents. The stand-out feature of the Revolution is the modular design allowing you to customise the helmet. Both the standard and the MIPS equipped model come equipped with optional ear guards for added protection (as shown in the photos), which although a touch goofy looking don’t interfere with fit or comfort. The ear coverage is vented, but don’t have padding on the inside which seems strange. These clip on and off easily and may well be worth a try. Either way you’re not paying over the odds for the helmet to include these, it’s all part of the package.

You can customise the colours of the Revolution with both peak and ear guards available in a range of bright colours. Again, not to everyones taste but if you fancy standing out from the crowd…

Talking of protection, Lazer have designed this helmet to have a removable chin bar option, extending its use into enduro stage racing or more aggressive trail riding when a full face helmet (or the protection that one provides) is desirable. The difference here is that the Revolution’s chin bar is bolted on to the helmet rather than clipping on (as with the Bell Super 2R, a helmet that we pick in the 2016 Dirt 100). This chin bar attachment is tested to CE standards for a full-face lid, so Lazer feel this really is a very versatile option for the gravity rider, even though it is not as quick a job to fit or remove it.

With a good deep fit all round, a reliable ‘Turnfit’ retention system, X-static padding and the ‘now almost standard’ camera/light mount, the Revolution looks well spec’ed. We’ve yet to receive the chin bar or have confirmation of the price, so we can’t comment on the ease of fitting and removal, but this, along with the ear guards will be tested with interest, so stay tuned…
