Cairns 1996… Shaun Palmer so nearly stuck one to the sport he had recently taken on, with a typical air of arrogance justified by his immense speed and demonstrated by his disregard for the sport’s skinsuits and champions. A classic World Champs with some tight racing and one of Nicolas Vouilloz’s early World Champs victories, the quiet Frenchman politely handing back a dose of humble to Palmer.
Alls I’m saying is that once I get some fitness he better watch out…
– Shaun Palmer 1996
Seeing the speeds riders were hitting back then on their basic bikes is pretty bloody impressive, so who knows what Cairns will hold in store for us this weekend with its return to international racing.
