Fury Road: Mont Sainte Anne 2016 Practice

Perfectly fast, perfectly furious

Fear. With a calender that infrequently changes year-on-year It’s not something we’re used to seeing among the World Cup elite, but this Mont Sainte Anne track has really shaken things up.

The forecast rain never arrived so we’ve been left with a baked track that could could be the fastest we’ve raced on since the days of fireroad bashing, one that suited those who could straighten their index fingers and let it hang out. It’s a fine line to tread though as a misplaced wheel would seen you gobbled up and spat out as Sam Dale, Myriam Nicole, Remy Morton and others found out.

Troy Brosnan was the fastest on the hill today. To give you an idea of how fast this new track is, his time of 4:07.6 has already eclipsed Josh Bryceland’s winning time of last year by 15 seconds. Hot on his heels was the returning World Champion Loic Bruni. Bruni claimed this was going to be a gentle comeback so has probably even surprised himself with his pace. Behind them lie a pack of Brits waiting to pounce – keep an eye on Danny Hart who had the fastest first three splits.

In the women’s race, Atherton and Carpenter were the only women to go under five minutes. It’s looking like another three horse race for the women with Tahnee yet to show her hand.

Here’s all the best action from day one:

The atmosphere will be hot and heavy in here over the next two days
The focus of a champion
The fastest man on the mountain - Troy Brosnan
The Bulldog was super aggressive everywhere today
Hart has had three podiums here in the past and already looks fast this weekend

Bruni smashed it on return by matching his number in TT
Gee’s had some rough encounters here at MSA (see his 2012 rag doll and 2013 ball buster) but he managed to tame the beast yesterday – 3rd
Bryceland has switched to flats and looks like he’s having a blast
Tracey Hannah got blown off on the hip section and hit the ground with her head quite hard but seems to be OK
Gwin will be loving the moto speeds here
Manon was second fastest on a track she won on in 2014
The season of a lifetime continues - ninth for Brayton
Not as much style as usual from Brendog today on a rough old track (although check out his one-footer on our Facebook)
We're still waiting to see what Tahnee has in her locker to threaten Atherton
Is he back on form? Sam Blenkinsop kept it mellow yellow today and fired himself to sixth on the time sheet
Bernard Kerr takes flight
With only seven juniors putting in timed training runs it's difficult to draw too many early conclusions
Myriam Nicole may have squandered her comeback with another injury - this time her ankle
Minnaar has a stellar record here and the longer courses always suit him well
