We’ve not even kicked off the 2018 season yet but the 2019 Enduro World Series calendar is already booked in and, with another four new venues, it’s making the World Cup look a bit doddery yet again.
The first three rounds are a carbon copy of this year’s event but then we get thrown into the usual whistle-stop tour of sleepy Alpine towns with world beating trails. First off take a scan through the key dates of the 2019 Enduro World Series then we’ll go in-depth on each round:
Round 1 – 22-23 March 2019 – Rotorua, New Zealand
Round 2 – 29-30 March 2019 – Tasmania, Australia
Round 3 – 10-11 May 2019 – Madeira, Portugal
Round 4 – 28-29 June 2019 – Canazei, Italy
Round 5 – 6-7 July 2019 – Les Orres, France
Round 6 – 9-10 August 2019 – Whistler, Canada
Round 7 – 23-24 August – Northstar, California
Round 8 – 21-22 September – Zermatt, Switzerland
First up will be a trip down under to the incredible trails of Rotorua, New Zealand and we assume the event will form part of the Crankworx Festival.
This North Island venue has proved a real hit with riders from across the globe, with many now travelling to the iconic trails of the Whakarewarewa Forest outside of racing for their off-season training. With a huge and ever growing mountain biking community in Rotorua, it’s little wonder the series decided to come back for a third time.
Chris Ball, Managing Director of the Enduro World Series, said: “. We couldn’t be more excited to be heading back to Rotorua – the trails are world class and the local riders, and community in general, always offer us such a warm Kiwi welcome.”
A year off in 2018 but this small town in the North East of Tasmania will once more put on a big show when the series heads back to this rider favourite on March 30, 2019. The venue blew everyone away when the series made its debut in 2017 – even picking up the Specialized Trail of the Year Award for Detonate Trail.
Race Director, Ian Harwood, of EMS Australia, said: “We are so excited to be able to bring Shimano Enduro Tasmania back to Derby. 2017 was such a roller coaster, we can not wait to make 2019 the whole theme park. Derby is continuing to grow at an astounding rate both in town and on the trails, it really is a mountain biking destination worthy of the EWS.”
Round 3 – 10-11 May 2019 – Madeira, Portugal
This tiny island in the Atlantic ocean made its EWS debut in 2017 and offered up incredible trails thanks to the dedicated work of the hosts Freeride Madeira. The diverse, technical trails proved a big hit with riders from around the world and provided a suitably dramatic backdrop for some tight and intense racing.
Race Organisers Freeride Madeira said: “We are super stoked to welcome the Enduro World Series again in Madeira! The race in 2017 was a life changing experience for all of us and it really helped to push the sport and allowed the biking community to grow in multiple directions.
“We did our absolute best to give riders a variety of trails, terrains and landscapes – making it an adventure from start to finish. That’s what riding and racing is all about and that’s what the Enduro World Series stands for. What an honour to welcome the best riders on the planet to the Pearl of the Atlantic once again!”
Round 4 – 28-29 June 2019 – Canazei, Italy
This small village high in the Dolomites will make its EWS debut on the weekend of June 29th next year.
Riders can expect long Alpine stages, featuring a mixture of natural and man made singletrack. Hosted by the amazing Superenduro team, we think riders are going to love this new location.
Enrico Guala, of Superenduro, said: “There’s no doubt that the Dolomites are a famous destination worldwide, but there’s way more to discover for a mountain biker then the landscape you can see on Panoramio.
“The local community has been working hard in the last years to recuperate old trails in the surrounding valleys, rich with culture, history, food and unique nature and it’s ready to open the doors of unrevealed trails for the EWS riders. Since I first visited here with my bike I fell in love with this place.”
Round 5 – 6-7 July 2019 – Les Orres, France
This ski resort in the Hautes-Alpes region of South Eastern France will offer up a classic slice of French style enduro; big Alpine descents, long stages and the odd chairlift ride to get to the top of those big mountain stages.
Julie Rogissard from the Les Orres Tourism Office, said: “The race in Les Orres will offer ideal height differences (2600m to 800m) and a diversity of terrain for the riders. You can expect beautiful single track with technical corners and a lot of speed through the “mélèzes” forest. The starting point will be at the top of the slopes, at 2600m, surrounded by a breathtaking 360° view and a panorama over the Serre-Ponçon lake.
“Les Orres is honoured to host the EWS competition and to welcome top-level athletes from all around the world. This is the result of the endeavour and of investments over the past few years to make Les Orres the mountain biking destination in France.”
If ever there was a venue that didn’t need an introduction, it’s the inimitable Whistler, arguably the planet’s most iconic riding destination. So it will come as no surprise to learn that the Enduro World Series (EWS) will return there for round six of the the 2019 season in conjunction with Crankworx.
This stalwart of the series has featured in every EWS season to date, and with good reason. The variety of terrain and trails Whistler can serve up in a single day’s racing always makes for one of the most dramatic events of the year.
Darren Kinnaird, Crankworx General Manager, said: “We are honoured to be included amongst a list of such incredible riding destinations. We’re looking forward to welcoming the athletes back to Whistler and seeing some of the best riders in the world hitting up our trails.”
Round 7 – 23-24 August – Northstar, California
This brand new venue nestled high in the mountains above the iconic Lake Tahoe will offer athletes a taste of classic Northern California riding, the birthplace of mountain biking. Hosted by the California Enduro Series, round seven is bound to be a hit with riders and fans alike.
Steven Gemelos of the California Enduro Series said: “We are excited to bring an Enduro World Series round to California – it’s been great working with Northstar and EWS to make this happen. The setup couldn’t be better — hosting an EWS North American Continental Enduro Series event in 2018, leading us into the Enduro World Series for 2019.
“We look forward to introducing some technical, rocky, loose California gnar to the Enduro World Series:”
Round 8 – 21-22 September – Zermatt, Switzerland
It’s the first time the series has crowned its World Champions somewhere other than Finale Ligure in Italy – and where better than in the shadow of one of Europe’s most famous mountains, the Matterhorn? With a growing reputation for it’s expanding trail network and flanked by incredible mountain scenery, Zermatt is the perfect location for this historic race.
Race Organiser Adrian Grenier of the TRAILLOVE Festival, said: “We feel super honoured to host the final round of the EWS 2019 here in Zermatt. It’s incredible to see the enduro community growing all around the globe. The goal is to provide the core elements of our sport: epic landscapes, endless trails, challenging experiences and unforgettable company within an international vibe in the middle of the Swiss Alps. See you in 2019!”
