Do the Math: It is a battle between Gwin and Minnaar after VDS Qualifying

So what do the qualifying results mean so far in the overall points race? The Women’s (Rachel Atherton) and the Junior Men’s (Laurie Greenland) titles are already decided, but in the Senior Men’s race it is oh so tight.

Going into qualifying Aaron Gwin (1089 points) was 135 points ahead of second place Greg Minnaar (954) and 220 points ahead of third place Loic Bruni (869). With 50 points for the win in qualifying and 200 points for finals Bruni did have an outside chance, but it would mean that Gwin and Minnaar would both have to score zero points and that Bruni would have to win both qualifying and finals… and that didn’t happen.

So where do we now stand? Well we have quickly cobbled together the points (this is not official so please check with UCI)

AFTER QUALIFYING
1. Aaron Gwin          1129 points
2. Greg Minnaar        979
3. Loic Bruni              899
4. Troy Brosnan        873

So Gwin is now 150 points ahead of Greg Minnaar, meaning that he only needs to come 30th or better to take the win… but Greg must win. We can’t remember what happens if Minnaar and Gwin would be tied on points. Of course there are all sorts of other permutations, Minnaar could still win with second place! As for the rest of the top five podium positions, well that is all to play for… we’ll have to wait and see what happens tomorrow.
