25 Years of World Cup Racing: Mondraker

The brand that laid the blueprint for modern production downhill bikes

To celebrate 25 years of World Cup Racing, we’re asking brands to count down their top five moments from the first quarter century of this amazing sport.

First up are Mondraker who took the downhill bike and, along with Fabien Barel and Cesar Rojo, totally took it to pieces. In a watershed moment, they brought in new standards in weight and length and then went on to show they could win with it too.

Since then it’s been a golden history for Mondraker on the world stage, most notably through Danny Hart’s incredible run of form at the end of 2016 and the brand’s total domination of that year’s World Champs.

Israel Romero, International Communication Officer at Mondraker, talks us through their greatest moments.

Mondraker had been on the World Cup race scene for a number of years and it was no surprise that they were working on a new DH bike. It was this win that not only saw the Frenchman back up to full strength after 27 races without a win but saw the interest go through the roof as people realised that the bike was not only a lot lighter than the competition but also had World Cup winning suspension and geometry.  The bike would go on to become the 2010 Summum Pro Team, the blueprint for modern production downhill bikes.

Champery World Champs, 2011 – Damien Spagnolo’s forgotten Silver medal

At the world championships in 2011 a young French racer stormed down the Champery hillside to claim an impressive silver medal in terrible conditions. The run was only beaten by an out of this world display from Danny Hart but the silver medal was done on the first ever Forward Geometry Summum and highlighted the clear advantages of the revolutionary geometry.  Since 2013 Mondraker have lead the way with their progressive geometry on production bikes.

After months of secret testing and prototyping Mondraker release the carbon fibre Summum and announce the signing of Danny Hart.  After gathering the world’s media in Spain Mondraker and MS Racing showed their commitment to World Cup racing with the signing of one of the hottest DH racers on the planet and once again push development with the carbon Summum, a bike which would later go on to dominate DH racing.

In 2016 Danny Hart had a season which will go down in World Cup history. After three podium finishes at the first four rounds, Danny would go on to win the remaining three rounds and set himself up perfectly for the World Championships

5. Val di Sole World Champs 2016 – Mondraker Make History

In 2016 Mondraker made history at the Val di Sole World Championships taking all three of the podium spot.  Danny Hart capped off his amazing run of results to take the jersey and gold medal for the second time in his career while young UK rider Laurie Greenland, in his first year racing as an elite took silver just behind him.  To cap that off Florent Payet finished off the podium spots in third making it an all Mondraker podium, the first for any brand.
