The Guts Behind The Glory: Wyn Masters
New Zealand’s Wyn Masters reveals the journey he’s taken to race at world level.
Wyn Masters is next to feature in Redbull’s series profiling riders that have made it on to the professional downhill circuit through their passion and commitment to the sport they love.
After impressing as a junior alongside his friend and contemporary Samuel Blenkinsop, Wyn struggled for funding as he looked to take his career to the next level by racing regularly in Europe.
He eventually made it on to the world scene in 2008 and for the next few years was a regular fixture at World Cup races. However, the 26 year-old has not had the best of luck since 2011 with injuries marring full participation in the last two seasons.
Despite the injury setbacks, Wyn’s undoubted talent still makes him an attractive proposition to teams and he was rewarded with a World Cup downhill spot on Team Bulls, a German trade team, for 2013.
Fort William was a bit of a washout for Wyn as he failed to qualify because of a puncture, but the popular New Zealander was hoping to show that was just a one-off with the World Cup moving on to Val di Sole a week later.
