SCOTT Sports Signs the Coastal Crew

Sun Valley, ID, March 10th, 2011 — SCOTT Sports announced today that they have signed The Coastal Crew freeriders to its Global Team. The Coastal Crew, based on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, is a group of three friends and riding mates. Dylan Dunkerton, Kyle Norbraten and Curtis Robinson, who all ride, film, and compete together under the same banner, now all ride the same brand of bicycle.

“We first started working with The Crew back in 2009 when we were working on the Kranked Revolve project. They were featured in the final segment, and I was impressed not only with the vision for the segment, but with the build as well,” said Adrian Montgomery. “There have been so many group segments produced, but theirs was the most thought out and the work that went into that segment really paid off for the viewer. Fast forward to today, these guys are not only excellent riders, but also fantastic builders, photographers, and filmers. They really have it all going on, and we are stoked to have them all on Scott Bicycles.”

‘’This will be my fourth year continuing a strong relationship on Scott bikes. Having a company stand behind and believe in your visions means a lot. We have exciting projects in the works so there is a lot to look forward to!”
–Kyle Norbraten

“I am excited to be involved with a brand who listens to your feedback and provides excellent support. Scott has a history of supporting film projects and we feel that it’s a perfect fit for us as The Coastal Crew. “
-Dylan Dunkerton

“This is my first season working with Scott, and to have a group of dedicated people at Scott backing your goals and vision is simply a no brainer. Keep an eye and an ear out for a full rack of Scott Bikes aboard our trusty BlackBox Labs Van this 2011 season.”
-Curtis Robinson

The Coastal Crew will ride the Gambler DH, Voltage FR and Voltage hardtail.

TEAM GREEN BRITAIN BIKE WEEK HELPS YOU AND YOUR BIKE GET FIT THIS SUMMER

Team Green Britain Bike Week (18-26 June), the UK’s biggest mass participation cycling event, is this year hosting ‘Britain’s Biggest Bike Fix’ – an ambitious attempt to fix as many bikes as possible during one week.

The aim of the Bike Fix is to liberate the thousands of unused bikes from sheds across the country, by encouraging people to dig them out and get punctures fixed, brakes adjusted and gears tuned, to get bikes (and the UK) fit for the summer. The opportunity to get your bike fixed is just one of the attractions of Team Green Britain Bike Week events – to find an event near you visit www.bikeweek.org.uk.

2011 is the second year in which Team Green Britain and Bike Week have come together to encourage Britons to reduce their carbon footprint and promote low carbon transport solutions to a wider audience than ever before. Founded by EDF Energy, Britain’s largest producer of low carbon electricity, Team Green Britain is a movement that aims to enable people to live in a more sustainable way before the Olympic and Paralympic Games arrive. This support, along with generous funding from the cycling industry in 2011, has made the event possible this year: The industry has doubled its financial contribution via the Bike Hub.

Phillip Darnton, Bicycle Association says: “Britain’s Biggest Bike Fix aims to help everyone – from families and people who have never cycled before – as well as those who need an incentive to cycle to work, and of course seasoned cyclists. Hopping on a bike not only helps you get fit, it can be really convenient and since there’s no fuel to buy, it can help you save money too – all powerful reasons to get involved.”

Victoria Pendleton, World and Olympic champion cyclist supporting Team Green Britain Bike Week says: “I would encourage everyone to get involved with Team Green Britain Bike Week. Choosing to cycle to the shops, school or for leisure instead of taking the car can help you get fit, save money on fuel, and reduce your carbon footprint all at the same time. If everyone were to swap one car journey a day for a bike trip, think of the collective benefit – to our planet, our pockets and our health!”

Team Green Britain Bike Week’s aim is to get more people cycling, more often. In 2011 it is supported by EDF Energy and the cycling industry via Bike Hub.

CELEBRATE OUR FORESTS DAY

Sunday March 20

To mark Celebrate Our Forests Day, cyclists, walkers, dog-walkers, riders, ramblers and picnickers are encouraged to get out into OUR woods and show their love for them

To celebrate our nationally-owned Forest and woods, cyclists are being urged to put on something yellow and go for a ride in their local woods on Sunday March 20.

Anything yellow will do – a bit of ribbon, tape round your handlebars – or full fancy dress if you want (and send us a photo).

So if you like riding with the family, with friends or just taking off on your own, put Sunday March 20 in your diary and get those tyres pumped and chain oiled!

In the Forest of Dean, Hands Off Our Forest are planning A Roll In The Woods, with both morning and afternoon bike rides on two circuits – one for mountain bikers, the other for families, leaving Pedalbikeaway/ Cannop Cycle Centre.

Organiser James Greenwood said: “The Forest of Dean is a great place for cyclists, gentle on families or quite testing for mountain bikers. The reason it’s so great is because of the way the Forestry Commission work with many different groups to make sure their needs are satisfied.’

38 Degrees is listing events country-wide where the public will be encouraged to demonstrate just how much their forests mean to them, with rambles, cycle rides, picnics and more being organised.

The day is a celebration of our public Forests – and also a day in which we can express our rights to them. It is up to us to ensure they remain in our hands, and stewarded by the Forestry Commission.

Although we have won a victory against the Public Bodies Bill and the flawed consultation, our campaign is not over until the Government confirms it has dropped its ambition of selling off, or transferring by another means, our – the people’s – woodlands. The 500 job losses in the Forestry Commission will adversely affect the management of our Forest. Currently we pay 30p each per year for our forests to be well managed for our benefit. Value for money? In many ways our continued enjoyment of our Forest is priceless.

Sunday March 20 is the eve of World Forestry Day. 2011 is the UN International Year of Forests – more reasons to celebrate and to claim our Forests for the people and the planet.

Chico Hooke Ltd State to ride from Lands End to John O Groats to raise money for Stephen Murray.

Chico says:
Why the ride? I’ve been thinking about it for a few years now, I did the
London to Brighton ride a couple of years ago and loved it. I was hoping to
do this last year but didn’t find the time… 2011 is the year!

What am I doing it for? The main reason for doing it is to raise money for a
good friend Stephen Murray and his family. Stephen is someone who I met at a
young age racing BMX bikes, we have been friends for over 20 years. In June
of 2007 whilst competing in a major contest in America (where he lives) he
had a catastrophic accident resulting in him being paralysed from the
shoulders down. Please take a look at the list of sponsors who have been
overwhelmingly supportive with this.

When will I do it? I plan to leave Lands End in early summer and make my way
up country to John O Groats covering over 900 miles just using the power of
my legs. My girlfriend Merryn will be driving the support vehicle which will
save me carrying any spare kit and allow me to concentrate on the ride (and
also give us a place to sleep at night!) I’m hoping to achieve approximately
100 miles a day which is pretty much the distance from London to Brighton
and back!

So don’t be shy dig deep and hit the donate button its for a good cause,
plus you can see me suffer!

Keep checking the website http://ltdstate.com/lejog for updates on the ride.

Chico Hooke.

NO FEAR EXTREME ENERGY ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A LINE-UP OF UNSIGNED TALENT

Are you daring enough to try out something that your mates would consider too extreme? Do you always push the limits? Are you willing to seek out risks, be bold and challenge yourself? If yes, then you could be the next extreme sports star as the UK’s fastest selling energy drink, No Fear Extreme Energy, has a very special sponsorship package worth £2,000 up for grabs.

With a new breed of adventurer riding, burning and spinning their way through the streets, while others opt out, the extreme lifestyle brand, which entered the UK energy drinks market with Britain’s first ever resealable drinks can, is calling for dynamic individuals to come forward and fight it out to become part of its ‘Extreme Line-Up 2011’.

Neal Haworth, No Fear Extreme Energy’s brand manager, commented: “We’re looking to support the development of extreme sports at grassroots level. Rising stars can often face a number of obstacles that stop them from reaching their full potential. With this search we are looking to help a select line-up of deserving ‘urbanists’ live out their dreams and reach their goals.”

In total, two funding packages are lined up within the following disciplines: Extreme Art & Music and Extreme Sport. Whatever the talent, as long as it falls within those areas, No Fear Extreme Energy wants to hear from you.

Continued Neal: “Not only will one person from each category be presented with £1,500 to go towards training, equipment and competition entry fees, but those selected to receive the funding will also have access to a year’s supply of No Fear Extreme Energy to aid them in their quest to reaching the top.”

To be in with a chance of getting your hands on ‘the money’, go to www.facebook.com/drinknofear, follow the instructions, and post a video of yourself performing your art/sport/music talent on the page.

On Sunday 5th June, the top five liked videos within each category will then be put to a expert judging panel, which will be made up of industry experts including Neal Haworth from No Fear Extreme Energy. The judges will then deliberate, and on Monday 13th June 2011 select the two lucky individuals to receive the sponsorship packages.

Continued Neal: “We’ll obviously be looking for a person who has a flair for extreme sport, but particularly, we’ll be looking for someone who stands out from the crowd, someone who does something different – who is innovative in their talent and takes the lead. I want to find a guy or a girl who has star quality, with extreme energy, passion and enthusiasm running through them.”

The criteria for the competition is simple, entrants must be:
• UK based
• Unsigned
• Receive NO funding from any other drinks brand or organisation
• Willing to take part in media activity

The winner from each category will be notified on Tuesday 14th June 2011 and will become part of No Fear Extreme Energy’s ‘Extreme Line-Up 2011’.

8th Glacier Bike Downhill Race in Saas-Fee
From 3’500m down to 1’800m

The 8th annual Glacier Downhill Bike Race will be held on March 26th, 2011 in Saas-Fee. This is no usual ride over hill and dale this race goes rather over ice and snow down to the glacier village. The riders will start in a mass at 3’500m. During the first half of the race enthralling fights are guaranteed to ensue for the lead position. It’s a race without spikes and with high velocity of 144 h/km. This year there is prize money in the value of 5’000 Swiss Francs.

The mass start is on the Mittelallalin station at an altitude of 3’500m and goes down over the snowy and icy slopes to the glacier village at 1’800m. The riders have to manage 1’700 metres of altitude difference and 8 km of distance. First they ride on a narrow trail along the Fee glacier, which leads them to the panorama hill. For less experienced racers this is a real challenge. The hill is steep and has to be crossed at high speed. High velocities of about 144 h/km have been measured per GPS on that part of the trail.

Valley run Morenia
Further down, the ride leads past the restaurant Morenia before entering the Valley run. This is going to be a very exciting part of the race with extremely steep passages, flat transits, narrow curves, and is a real assessment for the rider and his material. The last part of the ride, a very flat passage, needs strength to be managed. The decision who is going to be the winner is often taken during this part of the race.

The finish area
Shortly before the route the way becomes a little steeper. After reaching the desired end of the race, the award ceremony will take place, and in the evening the riders party will be at the Living Room.

CTC and Sustrans launch petition against helmet compulsion

Two UK organisations that promote cycling, CTC and Sustrans, have joined together to launch a petition against proposed legislation in Northern Ireland which would require cyclists to wear a helmet in any public place.

The petition can be signed by anyone in the UK, whether they live in Northern Ireland, England, Scotland or Wales.

The Cyclists (Protective Headgear) Bill was narrowly approved by the Northern Ireland Assembly in January and is now being scrutinised by the Environment Committee.

CTC and Sustrans have been careful to explain that they are not “anti-helmet”. Instead, they point to a catalogue of evidence showing that Northern Ireland would see a sharp reduction in the number of people who would cycle if the bill becomes law. This would have serious consequences for public health, quality of life, congestion and the environment.

Explaining CTC’s stance, Roger Geffen, Campaigns and Policy Director, said: “Cycling for day-to-day journeys is a relatively safe activity and it gets safer the more people there are cycling. This bill may be well-intentioned, but it will deter vast numbers of people from cycling, while increasing the risk for those who remain. At a time of mounting concern about obesity and climate change, scaring people into car-dependence is bound to shorten more lives than helmets would possibly save. I’d recommend our petition to everyone who enjoys cycling. With their support we can defeat this fundamentally flawed bill.”

Sustrans’ Northern Ireland Director Steven Patterson adds: “We share the wish of the supporters of this bill to improve the safety of cyclists but there are many better ways of doing this, such as giving every child on-road cycle training or reducing speed limits to 20mph in residential areas.”

Alongside this petition, CTC and Sustrans will submit a portfolio of evidence to the legislative committee.

You can sign the petition at tinyURL.com/NorthernIrelandHelmets
