Personaility of the Month – Steve Peat, Downhill World Champion
What is your job or other main activity that involves cycling?
I race Downhill Mountain bikes.
How long have you done that?
For 17 years now.
Where do you live?
Sheffield, just next to Wharncliffe Forest for good riding.
What most encourages you about cycling where you live?
The trails in the wood are always great.
What most discourages you about cycling where you live?
Thick gloopy mud in the winter.
How would you describe yourself as a cyclist?
A pure downhiller but enjoys all other aspects of cycling.
What is you earliest cycling memory?
3 years old – chasing my brothers around on their old bikes.
Where is the best place you have ever cycled?
Too many to mention, I like locally with good friends the best.
What is your greatest achievement, in terms of encouraging more people to cycle?
I run a development team for Downhill racing.
What single thing do you think would do most to encourage more cycling in the UK?
Bike clubs at school and cycling PE lessons.
What has been your favourite cycling experience?
Racing is my most enjoyable part of cycling.
What was your worst cycling experience?
Being injured and not being able to race.
What is it about using your bike that you like the most?
It keeps me sharp to succeed in my job.
