Peatys Steel City DH 2015
Theres something special that happens in Greno Woods in Sheffield each year. When Peaty’s magic in sprinkled liberally, amazing things tend to happen. The Steel City DH is one of those things; a local race with the atmosphere and attendance of a round of the World Cup. With entries selling out faster than the EWS and three thousand spectators cheering on the 300 racers. It is a sight to behold and a race not to be missed.
Last year most categories of the race had sold out in 20 minutes, some in less than 5. This years entries will open at 7pm on Friday 27th March, they will again be available through the British Cycling website.

This year the track is being totally reworked by local trail builders Biketrack.org, making it even faster with more flow and a few new challenges. From high up on the start ramp its flows down over berms and jumps, past Greno’s answer to Heckler’s Rock; the Jolley Gap Jump, through the rocky heath, railing the rollercoaster berms and pumps through rocks and roots before being launched into the infamous crowd filled bomb hole and over the finish line. This year there will be split times and a prize winning speed trap.
The race in very well supported by the local bike industry with amazing podium prizes and giveaways. This year there is a £1000 cash prize purse which will be split equally between the fastest men and women. Can anyone Beat the Peat and take the prize from him?
Last year’s race raised the bar for women’s DH racing; with one of the biggest ever fields in UK downhill with over fifty women racing, many for the first time.
The race has been well covered on these pages from way back at the start in2011 through to infamous Star Wars year in 2013.
The race is run as a not for profit event, everyone working on the race does so for free, for the benefit of the Wildlife Trust and trails in the woods. So many new trails have now been built in Greno that no more can be built for the next 5 years. Therefore the Steel City DH Fund has been created. The money made from the race will be used to maintain the trails in Greno with the remainder being placed in the fund and used exclusively to assist mountain bike projects around the Sheffield.
