You might have read this before, but this bit of Scottish news got lost in my mail box. Glentress is to get a £5 million quid visitor centre complete with cafe, bike shop, bogs and showers.
It’s due for completion by the summer of 2010.
You don’t have to wait that long for a bacon sandwich if you’re heading that way because Glentress already has the excellent Hub, which does bike hire and bacon sandwiches.

A new multi-million pound visitor centre is set to enhance the reputation of Tweed Valley Forest Park as the focal point for outdoor activities in South East Scotland.

Exciting and innovative design and the highest eco-friendly standards are the key elements in Forestry Commission Scotland’s new £5m Glentress Peel centre.

The four-building development will be in a stunning landscaped location on the edge of Glentress Forest, connected by imaginatively designed trails and served by new car parking areas.

Facilities at the 12 acre hill-side site – opposite the current facilities – will include

• bike shop and bike hire services
• showers, toilets, changing areas and information services to the Tweed Valley area will be located half way up the hill
• a cafe and meeting point.
• management facilities for on-site staff and associated partners
All the buildings are to be built on sustainable principles and will be a showcase for the use of timber. The frame of the building takes its form from the surrounding trees, demonstrating the strength and beauty of timber.

Site preparation will begin in November under the direction of civil engineers RJ McLeod. Construction work on the project is expected to start in spring 2009 and a completed by summer 2010.

Welcoming the news, Environment Minister, Michael Russell, said:

“Glentress Forest is visited by around 300,000 people every year and these new facilities will provide them with a memorable experience and high quality services.

“Glentress Peel will bring the site to life and play a big part in Glentress becoming a centre of excellence for outdoor recreation. It will also make a significant contribution to the local economy and be a source of pride for local communities.”

Glentress forest will remain open during this time however visitors will need to pay attention to construction site signage and obey diversion signs and safety instructions.

The £5m capital funding from Forestry Commission Scotland is supported with £200k from Sport Scotland and £740k from Scottish Enterprise.
