Frome Cobble Wobble 2012

December 16th 2012 saw the 4th annual Cobble Wobble cycle race up a wobbly, cobbly street in Frome, Somerset and what an event it was!

The Cobble Wobble is a test of power and strength to clear the 179yd, 1/7 climb, which is peppered with nasty cobbles.

The Frome Cobble Wobble is an individually timed bicycle hill-climb sprint up Catherine Hill in Frome. Thousands of cobbles, varying gradients and some tight turns to contend with meant the Cobble Wobble course promised to test the rider’s strength and skill. With the narrowness of the street, the backdrop of the 17th century buildings and the cheering crowd, the Frome Cobble Wobble is like nothing else.

The types of bikes in the race varied greatly from carbon road bikes worth over £10,000 to kids bmx bikes, it didn’t matter which bike you rode as it was such a fun and crazy event to take part in! Rain showers doused the cobbles throughout the day making the climb super slippery but it didn’t slow people down.
A few took it seriously with lots of training over the last couple of months but it was mainly the fun-loving fancy (and cross) dressers that stole the crowds attention.

An all star line up featuring the likes of Dan Atherton, Kye and Leo Forte, Martyn Ashton and Michal Prokop rubbed shoulders with riders from all walks of life.

The top 15 qualifiers from each category went into the final race: The Charge Bikes King of the Cobbles.

All eyes were on Lewis Lacey, Michel Prokop, James Horton and Martyn ‘Road Bike Party’ Ashton for the top spot. The racing didn’t disappoint and even a little rain shower in the middle of the King of the Cobbles battle didn’t upset the order.

Red Bull’s Michal Prokop showed his multi – World Champs winning form and lit up the cobbles to take the win over last years King, Lewis Lacey. Well worth a long trip from the Czech Republic! 3rd place went to Burnham BMX racer Ryan Stack.

The event is organised by Andrew Denham and is proudly supported by Charge Bikes, Red Bull, Knog and The Bicycle Academy.
