Just searching around the web for stuff and we came across this. We had heard that Nike were going to be heavily involved with the US team at this years Bejing Olympic games and this has trickled down to BMX racing, which will be in the games for the first time.
So there is an SPD shoe called the Nike BMX Dunk Gyrizo (named after the Greek word for wheel, according to Nike), but more importantly (and interestingly) is the race kit which was designed by BMX legend Bob Haro. Check it out. It is funny because the other day I was talking to a photographer friend and he was saying that old stuff doesn’t just have to be retro, it can be used to influence the modern day (just like in fashion and architecture do). Anyway, I couldn’t help but notice that the new design is very similar to Haro’s old designs from 20 years ago. Compare the new race pants to the old Haro ones in the shots below, there are some major similarities. I have heard them referred to as ‘patriotic pyjamas’, but apparently the design was influenced by 1980’s styles including the Comp 3 tyre tread.
The new kit and shoes were first shown at Nike’s ‘Innovation Summit’ out in Portland, Oregon where they were showing their Olympic technology to the media. And we also hear that the Chinese and Japanese teams will also be sporting similar looking kit come August.
And compare…
