10 years ago today Palmer crashed out at the Worlds

The World Cup final round is on this week/weekend in Schladming, things have been pretty quiet here today so I thought I’d share this email from photographer Mattias Fredriksson.

“Today it was exactly 10 years ago since the downhill race during the Worlds in Åre, Sweden 1999.

We are huge Shaun Palmer-fans here at Åre Bergscyklister, our local bike club, and to remember the legend we did a little memorial-thingy on the excact place where Palmer crashed, about 15 meters from the finish line. My buddy Olof got Palmers riding kit after the race 1999 (Olof was 13 years old…) so we placed it on the asphalt with a few notes and the Dirt issue 67 (with Geoff Waughs legendary photos).”

“September 16th 1999 was a rainy, muddy day on the hill here. Nasty conditions to say the least. Palmer had a sick run going and was on the way to a podium place. Coming in a bit too hot on the town square Palmer went down hard in the last corner. Nico Vouilloz was untouchable and won as usual.”

By the way, Olof wants to sell the race kit (the dress) if anybody is interested.
