Stan’s Notubes introduce new S1 wheelsets

Lower prices and wider rim options from the tubeless masters

With plenty of help in development from GT Factory Racing, Stan’s roll out their new S1 wheelsets along with a range of wider rim options. We take a look at the details.

Stan’s NoTubes set the industry standard for making mountain bikes tires tubeless. Using his ingenuity, Stan Koziatek devised the original NoTubes system in 2001, the same tech that today has become the benchmark in low weight and reliable sealing.

New levels of durability for more styles of riding.

Stan’s have introduced a new series of wheels designed to bring their patented tubeless technology to an even wider range of riders. Built for long life, low maintenance and at more affordable price points, the new S1 series wheels feature 6061series aluminium rims and are available in six different widths suited to more types of riding – all very easy to set up as tubeless.

With an emphasis on value and durability, the new S1 alloy wheelsets join a mountain wheel line-up that currently includes Stan’s successful MK3  alloy wheels and innovative carbon series wheelsets including the Bravo model that we have on test. While the updated MK3 wheelsets are built to balance strength, lower weight with increased stiffness, the S1 wheels will focus on maximum strength and durability at a keener price. The deeper profile and thicker walls of the new S1 rims result in a 50-70g weight increase over the new MK3 rims, but offer greater impact strength for an even wider range of use. They sound a good option to us, especially for many heavier riders.

“The new S1 series wheels were developed from rims ridden in Redbull Rampage and raced on the World Cup DH circuit for years – the goal was to take everything we’ve done for tubeless technology, and put it into a truly bombproof and affordable wheel.” Chris CurrieStan’s NoTubes.

Designed according to Stan’s WideRight rim and tire fit system, S1 series wheelsets will be available in six different rim models, with internal widths ranging from 23mm to 38mm. Combined with Stan’s low-profile, high-volume Bead Socket Technology rim design, these widths let the new S1 range accommodate tires from 2-inch to 3.5-inch.

There’s a big move to going to wider rims – giving better support and shape to wider and larger volume tyres

All S1 wheelsets will be built with 32 spokes front and rear, Sapim’s proven Race spokes and Secure Lock brass nipples – for reliability and easy availabilty. Stan’s recently developed and faster-engaging Neo hubs will be available to fit most axle systems, including Boost 110/148mm spacing. All models will be available in 27.5 and 29-inch rim sizes with selected models being available in 26-inch in certain markets.

The new S1 series includes reinforced versions of the classic Crest, Arch, and Flow – names already familiar to fans of Stan’s tubeless rims – all of which will be available in the UK. We’re big fans of the Flow rim here at Dirt and it’s proven itself over the years. In addition to these, Stan’s have designed three entirely new wheelsets with wider rims – the Sentry S1, Baron S1 and Major S1 offer Stan’s patented Bead Socket technology, bringing tubeless performance to the largest volume mountain and Plus tires. Of these new wider rimmed wheelsets, the UK importer Paligap will only be importing the 35mm Baron model to initially and this looks one that we’ll be keen to test.

There’s a big move to going to wider rims – giving better support and shape to wider and larger volume 2.2″+ tyres, with entry-level production bikes like the 2017 Marin Hawk Hill having wide (27mm internal) rims as standard. With plenty of 2.5/2.6″ options being shown at the recent 2016 Eurobike show and a Plus-sized bike in the Dirt 100 show these have arrived at a well timed moment.

These are the new wheelsets that will be of interest to us here at Dirt, especially the Flow S1 and Baron S1. All come ready fitted with tubeless tapes and valves.
