We had to make a call on the pedals; it was between the DX SPD and the Crankbrothers Mallets. While the Mallets have the advantage of being able to clip–in from multi directions and offering a bigger platform, they do suffer badly with any minor knocks and bumps, forcing you to delve deep into your pockets for a set of replacements, which can be frustrating. The Shimano pedals, with their resin casing, are more resilient and the bearings are typical Shimano quality, requiring little to no attention over a season. Though the DX’s don’t
have the multi directional clip–in function, they do offer a tension adjustment which the Mallet’s don’t, allowing the rider to hone the feel of the pedals to exactly how they like it. As it stands you cannot
beat the DX’s.
