Michelin X-Fire Sole

To perfect the project, Northwave partnered up with the guys at Michelin Technical Soles. They developed a specific sole for the job in hand, made of two different compounds derived from the tech used in Michelin’s top mountainbike tires. The aggressive lugged toe and heel tread provides superior traction on muddy and wet terrain when off and pushing. Northwave’s exclusive X-Crossbow midsole construction enhances heel area flexibility and control, also providing excellent shock-absorption.

The cleat area design allows faster clipping and better adherence on the pedals. There is plenty of cleat adjustment with longer slots – a detail that is becoming more common and good to see. The tread surrounding the cleat area is textured but not lugged allowing easier location of the foot into the pedal yet giving enough traction if not fully located.

SLW2 Closing System

Northwave’s SLW2 twist closure system aims to blend maximum precision with functionality and durability. The dial’s side mounted button has a dual function: press the button for micro release tension adjustment, or lift the button to instantly undo the shoe for quick removal.

The dial is low in bulk and weight yet is easy to grip and adjust and control reliable wires that close the upper against your foot and spread the pressure evenly. It may look overly complicated if you’re used to a lace closure on your shoes but a spares kit is available if needed. A top strap fastens around the upper shoe adding further stability.

Upper construction

Good ventilation is a given since this shoe was developed for potentially hot and dry European race conditions. The new multilayer construction is a light microfibre coupled with large thermo-welded mesh vent inserts at the same thickness of a traditional monolayer. The result: better comfort and reduced weight – and very quick drying times.

What do we think?

Northwave have produced a light, comfortable and well fitting shoe with the Enduro Mid. There is plenty of heel, toe and ankle protection, along with a good blend of sole stiffness and off-the-bike traction. A low top version is also available.
