E*THIRTEEN LG1+ PEDALS | WEAR AND TEAR

Steel pins rather than titanium differentiates the race from this, the standard E*Thirteen LG1+ pedal. 468g vs 380g, they come in at a reasonably light weight. With two length pins (4mm and 7mm) it’s pretty standard fare until on closer inspection the pedal features a polycarbonate wear–plate that attaches to the main ali frame of the pedal. They say this material change in the outer crash zone absorbs impact and disperses energy more efficiently than aluminium. They also say the polycarbonate slips off rocks easier than ali too.

In reality what the plates do is allow you to replace or freshen up your pedals at the end of season, however I recommend that you fit the pins of preference before heading out for a summer of shit and rock, as even after a week of life on the shorter pins I took one look at the task of replacement and slung tem back on the bike worried that I would round off the pin deeming them done and dusted.

Spin control adjustment is not really of much interest to me, however you can pop the cap off to adjust the pre–load and spin on the pedal.

In terms of use these pedals are fully functional with a secure hold even on the smaller pins. The platform features a pretty average size width but slightly more space forward and aft than say a standard Truvativ. Unlike many current designs the smaller axle bearing does not interfere with shoe grip, so in a way it offers the full platform width.

I like the quieter hits of pedal mashing into rock generally and the idea of lengthening the life of what is quite an expensive, yet essential, component appeals in general. These pedals certainly offer you more pound for pound, it’s just whether you can be arsed with the faff. I reckon the quietness and shape overrides the adjustability factor. They’re in the bag for the summer that’s for sure.
