Chromag Pedals and Stem

Quality components from Canadian brand

Just landed from UK importers Shorelines are these Scarab pedals and BZA stem from hardcore Canadian brand Chromag. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer…

SCARAB PEDALS

You may be familiar with Brandon Semenuk’s pedal design the Chromag Contact, a light pedal with a body that sits closer to the cranks for trick control. The Scarab is the other option from Chromag (as well as a proper flat pedal for kids) and has some interesting features.

Firstly, the Scarab has the usual slim but large (110mm x 105mm) CNC’d platform with nicely rounded corners and a low 13mm central height. They weighed in on our scales at 428g a pair. The pedals spins on silky smooth bearings and you can rely on the Chromag’s wet Pacific North West testing grounds as proof that they’ll be up to our UK climate.

The pedals have ten hardened steel pins on each side (with another 12 spares) and have washers for fine tuning the height. The deal here though is the ten additional threaded holes for moving or adding pins, giving 42 pin placement options for each pedal. Maybe it’s something you’ll use, possibly just tweaking the pin position just the once and leaving them there, maybe not. Either way, a quality pedal from a brand with a reassuring pedigree.

BZA 35 STEM

This chunky stem feels very purposeful and when we first took it out of the box felt a touch on the heavy side. It weighed in at only 193g for the 50mm length (a 35mm length is the other option) which considering the broad clamp and solid build is realistic.
The BZA stem comes only in the 35mm clamp size, which is usually an option on many stems. There are plenty of 35mm clamp bar and stems running on test bikes here at Dirt but we have yet to develop a strong preference for this bigger size. More brands are jumping onto this diameter and Chromag have other options such as the Ranger which comes in plenty of sizes.

The finish and hardware is up to the standard we would expect both from a stem at this price and from Chromag themselves. We’ll be fitting the BZA to an appropriately harder hitting enduro bike to compare it to our benchmark stems. Stay tuned.
