For 2013 the great looking (you could say D2 rip-off) TSG Staten will set you back an extra tenner compared to 2012, but although the lid appears to be the same from the outside there have been a few changes. The most notable one is that the chin guard has received extra reinforcement, with the result being that it now feels reassuringly sturdy. Sadly the same can’t be said for some other helmets that also sell for around the £100 mark.

TSG have also improved the shape of the cheek pads to improve comfort. We know that fit is always a personal thing, but all of here thought this lid fitted well so hopefully a load of you should think the same. There are also four sizes on offer so that improves the chances of getting a good fit even more. Of course, as with any decent lid these days the cheek pads and lining can easily be removed and washed.

The double D-ring fastening has been changed for a quick and simple snap buckle, and whilst some might argue that the new design isn’t as safe, it’s definitely safer than not doing the strap up, which is what a whole load of riders with D-ring strap helmets do because it’s such a faff.

This particular lid is the composite version and it weighs 970g (size large) on our scales which is certainly towards the lighter end of the spectrum. A carbon version is also available for £199.99, but the sample we had actually weighed 7g more than this composite one. Maybe it’s built even stronger, or maybe it was just because it was a sample? Either way though we’d be hard pushed to justify spending that extra money when this lid is already so good.

This new lid should be available around February/March time and once it is you’ll get a range of different graphics to choose from. Despite the slight price rise we still reckon this is a great value full face lid.
