Carbonlite Spanners – The Most Pointless Use Of Carbon Ever?

We’ve seen some pretty useless/pointless products over the years, but I think these carbon spanners from Carbonlite tools have to take the biscuit. It might make sense to make a multitool out of carbon to try and save some weight, but surely making a set of spanners out of the stuff is completely pointless, you’re never going to carry tools like this on a ride.

You could possibly be forgiven for making some carbon spanners if they were beautifully made, purely for the pimp value alone, but these things look awful. They’re simply cut out of a crappy sheet of carbon with the result being that they look about as ergonomic as a cactus seat cover. The manufacturers even advise that you wear gloves to use then cos you might get carbon splinters! Well I suppose at least they are honest!

To make things even worse the steel inserts are all tapered “so that when a bolt head is inserted deeper into the teeth, the tighter the teeth are around the bolt head”. To me this just means they couldn’t manage to make them close enough tolerance, and all that design will do is put all the load in one place. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough the set of five spanners all have a metric size at one end and an imperial one at the other, just to increase your chances of rounding off a bolt head even more.

I don’t think they could have failed any harder if they’d tried, and all for a bargain price too! Buy some and you’ll be the spanner!
