Bontrager Line Pro Pedals

New flatties from Wisconsin

Just launched at the Sea Otter festival in the US last weekend, these Line Pro pedals from Bontrager look bang up to date. We take a look before we hit the trails with them.

The guys from Bontrager dropped into Dirt HQ before heading over to Sea Otter and gave us a run through on what’s new with them for the 2016 season ahead. They have been busy and showed us sneak peaks of wide carbon rims, DH and trail handlebars, and developments to their Line range of components including this all new pedal, the Line Pro.

We’ve seen plenty of pedals roll into Dirt for testing in the last sixth months, with Chromag, Gamut and Crank Brothers all having new flat options and going up against our favourites in the 2016 Dirt 100. There are plenty of options out there but many suffer from an odd shape (often with a big bulge around the inboard bearing), too high a profile, or bearings that don’t last a full four seasons without giving up. Sometimes, one ride is enough to say the pedals aren’t quite right and we switch them for another type.

What does the Bontrager Line Pro pedal offer?

A 102mm width and a 99mm length hits the spot for most size feet, with a medium profile of 17mm around the axle area and a gradual concave shape. The body is 6061-T6 aluminium with a nicely machined surface where your foot is in contact. Traction is via ten adjustable thru-pins with removable washers to tune height. They look easy to replace from behind when damaged but there are no spares supplied in the box.

The Cro-mo axle spins on sealed cartridge bearings and have 15mm pedal spanner slots as well as 6mm Allen key fixings on the back to attach or remove them from the crank.

Trek have developed these pedals with the C3 Project riders and for their only flat pedal in years (it’s a long time since the Earl and King Earl flatties were in the Bontrager range) it looks like they have done their homework.

The Line Pros look like smooth running, well shaped pedal with good pins, but are they good enough to to sit up there with some of the most well-regarded flats on the market such as the DMR Vaults? An unconditional 30 day guarantee shows Bontrager are confident in their design.
