In the city center of Interlaken, riders from seven nations performed tricks and jumps on the highest level. The Spaniard Andreu Lacondeguy showed some breathtaking tricks, which secured first place for him in the MTB Dirt Jump Contest of the Nissan Outdoor Games by Columbia.
After a spectacular qualifying jam on Saturday, the riders kept throwing down in the Best Trick Contest that followed afterwards. Benny Korthaus and Andreu Lacondeguy were battling head to head and pushed themselves to their limits. Andreu started of with a clean backflip superman, which Benny countered with an extremely high 360-tailwhip on the first big gap, landing perfectly, during his second run. As the “Rock’n’roll Spaniard” likes to always have the last word, he pulled a backflip tailwhip over the second (shorter) jump. He couldn’t outdo Benny’s clean execution, extreme amplitude and the 100% bike control he had during the landing which determined him as the winner of the Best Trick Contest and the CHF 1,000 prize money.
Aside from Benny and Andreu’s amazing riding, there were a lot more spectacular stunts to be seen; for example, the Australian Darren Pokoj showed once more how “nosedive” you can turn a 360, which brought about the creation of the new trick-name “Down Under” amongst the riders. Furthermore, the two Germans, Andi Wittmann and Rob J, proved themselves as serious competitors with their flipwhip attempts during the Best Trick Competition.
The finals on Sunday were no less exciting than Saturday’s program. In a great, sunny atmosphere, the finalists showed numerous 360 – and backflip combinations as well as barspin to X-up, no foot cans, supermans and much more.
With a backflip nohander and a 360-tailwhip, Andreu Lacondeguy astonished not only the numerous spectators and fans but also the other riders. Not only the difficulty of the tricks but the execution and the overall style convinced the judges that this had to be in 1st place. Benny Korthaus’ combination of backflip tabletop and 360-tailwhip landed him on the 2nd place, close behind Andreu. The Down Under rider Darren Pokoj secured the 3rd place with a tire grab-to-suicide no-hander at the first jump and a superman indian air at the second gap.
During the prize giving the guys showed big emotions. Benny Korthaus and Andreu Lacondeguy didn’t hesitate a moment and donated a considerable part of their prize money (the total was CHF 10,000) to their recently injured BMX colleague Stephen Murray.
