Building Fury Road

How this year's Rampage lines came together

Last year, the Red Bull Rampage venue was a totally raw blank canvas. The new venue would be woodwork free to return the event to its big mountain roots but it led to a mad scramble to simply find a way down from the imposing peak.

Practice was a sketchy affair with big name riders getting injured and some pulling out before the event even began. On competition day, there were high winds and further injuries leaving some competitors questioning whether the event should have been run at all.

This year, the two main routes from the top are alreadyestablished and dig teams can start to get creative on the mid and bottom sections. Big booters and trick jumps are popping up on every plateau and landings and take offs have been buffed and widened to make them safer.

The Suicide Squad of Zink, Strait and Pef are using the extra time to put in a route vertically down from the top. It’s utter madness and if they can make it work, it’s going to blow minds.

However, the weather vanes are swinging again and we could be looking at another faltering Rampage if this wind doesn’t blow itself out by Friday. If it does, then we’re almost guaranteed a blockbuster event, here’s how it came together:

Water is an absolute essential for keeping the swirling dust under control. Just a shame it's an absolute pig to get up the mountain
The high winds have left riders caked by the end of a day's digging, let's hope it dies down before the weekend.
Semenuk, as always, is keeping everything under wraps but we've seen some big booters up the hill on top of his old line
The sheer cliffs of the top give way to high speed, groomed hits near the finish
Thomas Genon in the fierce desert heat. The Frenchman has big plans after last year’s exhibition in fluidity
All smiles for Carson Storch who surprised everyone with his breakout ride last year
Ethan Nell had this flatspin clicked yesterday evening
Bas stayed away from the Insta vids and money shot jumps but was spotted trialling the lower section of his line too
FEST boys Lacondeguy and Vinny T showing the way on the bottom jumps
Andreu Lacondeguy seemed less toked on Rampage last year than he has been in the past. However, as one of the first to send it last night, could he be back in the hunt this year?
Ethan Nell lays it as flat as a shovel for the 'gram
It's all flipping off here
