Gee Atherton wins men’s qualifiers – Fort William World Cup 2016

Is the Fort William hat trick within his reach?

Gee Atherton came out fighting in Fort William to claim top spot in the men’s qualifying. He was in the top two in all sectors and emerged more than two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Eddie Masters shocked everyone (including himself) by crossing the line in second, all he could say in the finish area was “I dunno what happened”. Aaron Gwin rolled down in third and was separated from fourth placed Troy Brosnan by less than four hundredths of a second. Rounding out the top five was Gas-to-Flat himself Adam Brayton who had a horrendous top section but put in a stormer down the rest of Aonach Mor and finished only just three seconds back.

Both Greg Minnaar and Danny Hart put in some blistering sections but a puncture and a crash respectively put them back in the pack. There was further good news as Peaty comfortably qualified for his final British World Cup, although he’s unlikely to feature on the live stream tomorrow.
