The Whole Gamut

Stealthy hardware from the USA

Fresh in from our visit to IceBike is a box full of hardware from Gamut. We take a look at this good looking, stealthy range of pedals, stem and chainrings from the USA.

Gamut started way back in 1999, when Juan Graziosi started making chain guides with his father, initially just for personal use. Word spread and he started selling them at local races. Soon after this developed into a proper rider-owned company which then became Gamut USA as we know it today. Their aim was (and still is) to develop and produce high quality, easy to install mountainbike products with a simple and clean aesthetic.

‘After all, we wanted to ride our bikes not work on them’

If you’re familiar with Gamut then it will probably be their chain guides that you’ve used. They produce an extensive range suitable from trail through to DH and have a reputation for a high quality finish and build. It’s all solid stuff, yet light and good looking.

Gamut have spread their wings over the last few years and with them acquiring the brand Point One Racing back in 2014 have spent a good amount of time fine-tuning and developing a top end flat pedal along with bars, a stem and a revised range of chainrings. We check out what they’ve got in their line up for the 2016.

PODIUM PEDALS

The Podium pedals have had a good few tweaks and redesigns before Juan and the team were truly happy with them. They’re here in the UK now, and we finally have a pair to test. Are they worth the wait? They sure look good, so what’s the deal with them?

You may well remember the early Point One Podium pedal prototypes and this was the starting point for this design. In effect this is version three of that original model. With an all aluminium forged body, the profile is incredibly thin with only a slim bulge around the crank end. The Cro-mo axle spins on four bearings, a design that Gamut feels (after extensive testing) will really go the distance. Nine pins on each side are long and bolted in from behind allowing easier removal if damaged. Sizing of the platform is very similar to our benchmark DMR Vaults, however the Podiums do sit around 7mm nearer to the crank arm with the effective width of the platform being a touch narrower. The Podiums are very light at 295g a pair.

Smooth, well sealed, light with a good slim platform and well-placed pins. The Podiums look good but are definitely at the top end price wise. We’ll get them bolted onto a test bike and report back on their feel and durability. Will they make our pick of ‘the best flat pedals’?

CILLOS STEM

The Cillos stem (named after the street where Gamut began) has been around since last year but it’s the first time we’ve taken a proper look at one.

Available in 40,50,60 and 70mm lengths, with a zero degree rise, this is obviously a stem with a hard hitting pedigree. This is no XC stem chopped down in length; that wouldn’t be Gamut’s style. It’s a ground up design, heavily sculptured and something special to look at, with no sharp edges in sight.

A broad 55mm wide face-plate should give a solid feel and the 165g weight is light without getting silly. Gamut are firm believers in the 31.8 clamp size, and after repeated testing with the newer 35mm clamp standard are sticking with the former, which they feel is the way to go. It’s hard to say more without riding the Cillos and we’ve got a 40mm length to test. Stay tuned and we’ll let you know what we think.

TTR THICK/THIN RACE RING

Rings for ‘One by’ transmissions are big business these days and you’ve got loads of options when it’s time to upgrade. With muddy, wet and gritty trail conditions right on our doorstep here at Dirt we have tested a good number of these to destruction. Most chainrings give good chain retention when matched to a clutch rear mech and they usually stay in shape, but it’s noisy gears and rapid wear that are usually the main problems.

The TTR Race Rings from Gamut are machined in Canada from 7075 T6 aluminium and are available to fit most current crank bolt standards including XTR M9000 and the XT M8000 which we have here to test. Ring sizes are 30, 32, 34 and 36T, which covers most riders’ needs. They have a hard anodized black finish with machined cut outs to trim weight further. Gamut feel they offer great durability with an optimal chainline as well as effective chain retention. We’ve got an XT 1×11 transmission due in for a test bike so we’ll be comparing this Gamut ring to the original Shimano component.

We've teamed-up the Gamut stem with an Answer Pro Taper SL Carbon bar on the Whyte T-129 that we currently have on test... and saved 144g in the process (for bar and stem combined).
