Watch: Disc brake vs industrial lathe

Gonna need some new pads

Most of us will have had a disc brake brand on the inside of our calves after a long Alpine descent but setting a brake on fire takes it to a whole new level. For no specific reason, a man who sounds like Dr Frankenstein has strapped a disc brake to his industrial lathe and tested it to destruction. Mad scientist, we salute you.

Unsurprisingly the disc brake loses pretty badly and even sets on fire (skip to 3:20 for that). The filmer seems to think that sintered brake pads would stand up to the task better, but we’re not so sure… Don’t worry about your brakes falling so catastrophically though. The lathe is spinning at 800 rpm, which is the equivalent of going erm… very fast (anyone want to do the maths?).
