Kathy Sessler and her ‘On Any Sunday’

Retro epicness from Sprung 5

Watching the 50to01 boys (Bryceland, Dale, Peat, Lewis, etc.) the other day with their take on Bruce Brown’s epic film ‘On Any Sunday’ reminded me of one of my favourite sections of any film, ‘Kathy Sessler’s History Lesson’ (above) from Milan Spasic and Alex Rankin’s classic Sprung 5 from back in 2001.

Words: Mike Rose

You may know Sessler as the Santa Cruz Syndicate team manager, but that is only recent history; she was a stuntwoman and top level racer herself (she even had her own Troy Lee Designs sticker, ‘One Fast Mother’)… but before all of that, back in the early 1970’s at the age of 14 years old, she made this now legendary piece of 8mm film. Influenced by On Any Sunday (see below) and all the motocross stars of the day she, her friends and brother built tracks and put on races. Have a look, it’s California dreaming and a very important part of riding bikes on the dirt… and it makes you feel great to be alive.
