Webisode: Team Propain Dirt Zelvy – Lourdes World Cup 2016

Shredding and spaghetti from our boys in blue

For the first World Cup round of 2016, the racing circus headed to the French/Spanish border and to the town of Lourdes, nestled in the middle of the Pyrenees. There was no religion going on this weekend, don’t worry, just some of the tightest racing and WORST CONDITIONS that we’ve seen at a World Cup for a long time.

Team Propain Dirt Zelvy enjoyed a great week down in the mountains, that last year were roasting hot and dusty. Check out all the bicycle, skateboard and spaghetti related endeavours below in the team video!

Hot off a 2nd place last weekend at Ae Forest BDS, Scottish whippet Innes Graham was hot on the chase to get back into the world cups and take on the French brute of a track. He was feeling very confident on the bike, and handled the horribly greasy qualifying conditions brilliantly to then put down a solid race run as the sunshine came out to play, finishing 33rd. Check out his thoughts below:

“Well, y’know Tommy’s ten grand camera survived witnessing the weekend so I thought I better have a good race to match. It was mint, so dry! It dried out so quick and I was thinking about putting dry tyres on. But I thought just run what I’ve got and what I know and it paid off. Track was mega dry, bike was sick, I think I could have gone a lot faster though as I didn’t know how hard to push due to conditions.”

On the back of also enjoying a podium at Ae Forest is lanky team icon Phil Atwill. Many comments were made over the course of the weekend about Phil’s unique line choices that had him looking, as usual, like a wild man. He put down a brilliant run in qualifying to land an 18th, which firmly cemented him as a contender at the first world cup of the year.

He managed to park up and spin out The Gate’ a good few times over the weekend – The Gate being his bike (it’s huge), but he managed to pull a solid run together on sunny Sunday to land him in the top 40 with a 39th. See what he thought of the weekend below:

“I thought I threw it away up at the wall up top, up on the steep chute. I got kicked out of the main line and spat towards that inside berm and then did a gate and parked her up in the corner, but then I just carried on. Apart from that it was really good, I got close to death on the motorway where I accidentally took off sideways after hitting a rut wrong, that slowed me down quite a bit. Innes rode really well though in the conditions, he did sick!”

James Purvis, our young up and coming junior was on fire in the mud, holding his own amongst the big boys. However, due to a technical difficulty prior to James’ run, it wasn’t possible for him to start his qualifying run, which was horrendous bad luck for the North East lad.

Our resident Viking, Isak Leivsson, also unfortunately had bad luck this weekend. Journos said that Isak won the ‘wall’ section of the track on practice day, looking very comfortable on his bike after a winter out in North Carolina with the likes of Neko Mulally and Luca Shaw.

Spirits were high until he injured his hand whilst taking a tumble on the morning of qualifying. With a suspected fractured wrist, he could not ride and therefore qualify. A bad start to his season but his hopes are high for Cairns with full faith his wrist will be okay to race.

“So yeah, my weekend kind of ended before it even started, which was a shame. On my 3rd run of the weekend, I slid out and got off line. I hit my wrist on the bank, stretched all the ligaments and it was way too stiff to ride. I’m looking forward to Cairns though, I’m pretty sure I’ll be good to go for then and restart my season there I guess. ”

There we have it, world cup number one over with. Some ups and downs but overall a good weekend for the team. We’re currently trucking home at warp speed through France in Vampire Deluxe to get some packing done before we all head out to Cairns, Australia for round 2 of the world cup next week. Here’s a family photo to top things off, enjoy and we’ll see you in Cairns!
