Last year the death knell was rung for British domestic downhill. But as the BDS bowed out, a new series has risen from the grave and, if the first round is anything to go by, the scene is as vibrant as ever.

The first round was hosted by the Welsh Gravity Enduro boys in Cwmcarn, a venue that last saw a downhill race as part of the Dragon Series back in 2008. It was a canny pick for the first round of the series too. With rider numbers dropping rapidly in 2017, a new, hard pack, bike park-y venue ensured a bumper turn out and a real buzz around the race. This was an awesome launch party for the start of the season and a revamped national series.

In the women's race, it was always going to be a major tussle between Atherton and Seagrave. Atherton won out after Tahnee let it slip in the middle section but expect that battle to continue through the whole season.

The men's race came down to a showdown between the Madison Saracen boys. Matt Walker just slipped ahead in seeding but then put down a commanding performance in his first ever Elite finals to put 1.3 into Hart and the rest of the pack.
