Carins World Cup 2016: Qualifying photos

Australia fair

Aussie dominance was the story of the day as Troy Brosnan and a resurgent Mick Hannah unshackled themselves to lay down scorching times on a red hot day in Cairns. The two natives will be the last men down the hill tomorrow and will no doubt be spurred on by a ‘lubricated’ Australian crowd.

Sun blasted through the jungle canopy today and a dry track allowed the riders to blast through the undergrowth and lay down some scorching times. That didn’t stop a number of riders hitting the deck though  – Josh Bryceland, Tahnee Seagrave and Finn Iles were among the casualties.

Here are all the best photos and insider info from qualifying:

A perfect summary of the days conditions – there were quite a couple of rain showers over night but the track remained dry throughout the day.
Finn Iles took a big spill in the rock garden today. At the moment he’s unsure if he’ll be up to racing tomorrow.
Stylish Aussie junior Remy Morton qualified third.
Elliott Heap toughed it out after a big crash yesterday. He was riding with a sore wrist today.
Matt Walker slotted himself into top spot in the juniors. Not bad for a first year.
It may have been hot all day but the track is yet to fully dry.
Tracey Hannah was probably tipped by many to take qualies with ease. She’ll have to settle with third despite being fastest through the first two splits and the speed trap.
The rock garden is still catching out riders, even in the dry. Seagrave was its latest victim here.
Second place sounds good for Manon, but she still has to find 5 seconds on Rachel somewhere.
Can anyone stop Rachel being the first down to the sea tomorrow?
Rachel topped out women’s qualies despite a crash, the rest of the field should be very afraid.
There was a crocodile hanging around the pits… just in case you were in any doubt we were in Australia
A run to forget for Brendan Fairclough. He came down 81st but his protected status keeps him in the hunt.
A crash for Bryceland sees him 36th, he was 6th up until split 4 though.
Blenki came over the line in 16th but recovered from 37th at the first split.
Florent Payet consolidated a strong race in Lourdes with a 13th place qualifier.
Young Aussie Graeme Mudd stuck it into 12th, what a Fantasy League pick he would have been!

It looks like Gee won’t be borrowing shoes tomorrow.
Connor Fearon made for a third Aussie in the top ten after finishing ninth.
Kerr is quietly putting together a very strong start to the season. He qualified eighth.
Danny Hart finished seventh despite being one of the slowest riders through the speed trap.
Branngigan banged his Commencal into sixth place with a storming final sector.
It's almost unusual for Bruni not to qualify first nowadays. He starts fourth.
Aaron Gwin is the highest placed non-Aussie in the field. He’s only a second back on Brosnan.
Fast and focussed today, Mick Hannah sprung into second place and was fastest through the speed trap for the second day in a row.
Brosnan’s been hunting for a win since Fort William in 2014, he’ll be the last man down the hill tomorrow.
