Winter Digging Wales

Tom Fryer sent us news of some Winter Digging Just writing to tell you about some winter digging going down in North Wales.

Sunday just gone saw the first digging session at Nant Gwrtheyrn.  This is a brand new venue for 2010 in North Wales.  Simon Ward (Wentwood cup race organiser) has teamed up with myself to put on uplift days and a cat e race here in 2010.  We call the organisation “simply downhill” see www.simplydownhill.co.uk.  We have agreed support from Revolution Bikes www.revolution-bikes.co.uk and are interested to hear from any other organisation that may be able to help out with any of the costs or provide prizes.

The main part of the digging day was working on making a massive rock section into a rideable rock garden.  The course starts off steep and zigzags down the hill before hitting a loose rock garden called “snookerballs” shortly after this there will be a bridge over the stream crossing.  Next is a steep disused fireroad with a long drifty corner on it.  This shoots you into the long rock garden section where good skills are needed to keep the exit speed as fast as you enter.  The course will then drop steeply again to finish with a jump into the finish area by the car park at Nant Gwrtheyrn visitor centre.

The centre is perfect for a race venue as it has a private tarmac road to the top, the centre has a bar and large seating and restraunt area.  B&B accomadation is also availiable in the cottages at the centre.  See http://nantgwrtheyrn.org/ for more details.

It is important that no-one rides here outside of races and uplift days so we don’t risk loosing the venue.
