Listen to the wise words of Petula Clarke and get yourself to downtown Twin Town Swansea this Sunday for some urban descending action…you knows it!

UK’S TOP AMATEUR DOWNHILL MOUNTAIN BIKERS HOME IN ON SWANSEA FOR RED BULL DOWNFORCE!

This weekend, Red Bull Downforce is being held in Swansea city for the first time on Sunday December 4 between noon and 3pm. Amateur mountain bikers will speed down some of Swansea’s steepest slopes in an adrenaline fuelled event.

The race will see 32 top amateur riders from far and wide including Swansea locals, Greg Hampton 20 and Robbie Rickman 25, compete along some of the steepest roads in the UK. Riders are expected to reach speeds of up to 40 mph and will take on a variety of terraces, steps and drops with a backdrop of Swansea Bay. The event has even excited Britain’s multi World Cup Downhill Mountain Bike medal winner Gee Atherton who will be attending on Sunday. He said:

” I’m super excited about Red Bull Downforce, the whole concept is a winner and the course looks set to challenge everyone at all levels, its going to be a real opportunity for amateur riders to showcase their talent and get the recognition they deserve.”

“The folk of Swansea are in for a real treat at Downforce, the race is going to be like nothing the area has seen before and I’ve no doubt in my mind that the locals will spur the riders on!”

Rachel Atherton, women’s Downhill MTB World Champion, will also be attending and said:

“Its so cool for amateurs to be able to participate in an event like this, I would have been absolutely over the moon to race this when I was just a girl starting out. There are SO MANY amazing riders in the UK and this is a perfect opportunity to showcase their talent and bring it to people who wouldn’t normally see mountain biking. We grew up racing around Swansea so its always cool to go back to our roots and be a part of events like this. The MTB scene in Wales is awesome, from up near us in N. wales right down to S.wales, some of the best riders and best terrain in the world.”

Spectators are welcome to come and watch the event for free. Riders will start at Nicander Parade in Mayhill before descending into the city centre and finishing on Princess Way in the City’s heart with prize-giving in Castle Square at approximately 3.30pm for the top three riders who set the fastest times.

Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “Red Bull events have a real wow factor and this will help further raise the profile of Swansea at a time when we are already celebrating sporting excellence by having a football team in the Premier League.”
