With a year of racing under their belt, the Dirt Propain Zelvy team had plenty of feedback on the Rage downhill frame and the result is this – the new carbon Propain Rage.
The riders had two main areas of concern, firstly they wanted an XL version and secondly they wanted carbon. Atwill and co were running custom, longer Rages all year, but this bike 1cm longer than even those. The carbon choice was not to do with the weight of the old frame but instead it was a way to gain stiffness, although it has still saved 500 grams.
The frame comes with a range of tunability primarily from the totally new headset cups. Propain is calling its ultra-wide headtube a new standard and it has produced a set of cups that can adjust the reach by a massive two centimetres – a gap that’s so big they’ve had to call the bike an L/XL because it straddles sizes. Unlike aftermarket cups, Propain’s can only be inserted straight so there’s no chance of your fork bending, and there’s also a middle setting offering a middle ground between the two extremes. The process is tool free so Proapain believes you could even do this trackside if you needed.
The chainstays are also adjustable with a long mode for a stable race bike and a short mode for a more playful ride.
The bike benefits from a new linkage that brings more progressivity to the start of the stroke and some tweaked angles that came from the boys’ feedback.
There’s no word on availability or prices yet (it hasn’t even been tested by the Propain Dirt Zelvy team) but it looks like it’s going to be a beauty. If you want one in the navy/orange shown here you’ll have to hurry though, Propain is only making 50 of them.
