Asia Pacific Downhill 2013

The 2013 edition go the Asia Pacific Downhill Challenge took place in KlungKung, Bali and Specialized’s Troy Brosnan (AUS) took home the win. Brosnan was joined on the podium by Guillaume Cauvin (FRA) of Polygon Hutchinson in second and Kazuki Shimizu of Japan in 3rd for Kona. Tracey Hannah took home the Open Women’s category win.

Riders had to deal with an incredibly dusty, slippery track all week and not the most ideal of conditions with temperatures soaring to 35c with 100% humidity. Staying hydrated was key, and many of the foreign riders struggled with the heat. The course featured off camber corners, some natural stepdowns and a few man made jumps and one of the best views you could hope for from a downhill track with gorgeous beaches and oceans as far as the eye could see from the top of the track.

Hundreds of fans mobbed the riders all weekend for photos and autographs as the riding scene in Indonesia is strong and the fans are incredibly enthusiastic about a sport where equipment can cost more than many people make in a year. They are also one of the most welcoming people one could hope to encounter, greeting everyone with open arms onto their land and into their homes. Bali isn’t known as an international riding destination, but the scene here is strong.

“I had heaps of fun this year!” Brosnan explained after his run and a chance to cool off. “There was plenty of fun times and the new track was actually really good. My race run was solid and I just wanted to get down safely. Taking the win was such a good feeling and I can’t wait to go back next year!”
