AN AMAZING WEEKEND FOR THE ATHERTON FAMILY

Photo: Kathy Sessler

What a weekend, the Atherton family out in Andorra at the second round of the Nissan sponsored UCI World Cup did the near impossible, they totally cleaned up. First Dan Atherton took the win in the 4X, then sister Rachel won the women’s downhill. The pressure was then piled on younger brother Gee to win the men’s downhill. He had already posted the fasted qualifying time earlier in the day, so everyone was expecting something big. He took the win and we are now in a bizarre position, three members of one family, all on the same team, all wining…unbelievable. This has never happened before in the history of the sport. What makes it even more special is the fact that this Andorran round was held just down the road from Commencal (their bike sponsors) HQ.

Party on? Well who knows. With Fort William coming up this weekend you can expect the ever professional Athertons to be planning and preparing. Did they go out and sink 40 pints and a couple of hundred Red Bull vodkas…I doubt it.

We should also give props out to Danny Hart, he won the Junior category race and finished 22nd overall. At 16 that is not bad for your second ever world cup race.

And in other news Britain’s Shanaze Reade won her second consecutive BMX world title out in China, beating France’s Anne-Caroline Chausson and New Zealand’s Sarah Walker. We should also mention that this weekend Dale Holmes added the the UCI BMX Masters World Championship title to his long list of achievements, and that Jill Kintner has qualified for the Beijing Olympics this year. Nice work.
