Endura MT500 II

Highly breathable and waterproof jacket

A highly breathable, waterproof and technically top-notch jacket from the Scottish weather experts.

Here’s another jacket that’s just dropped into the office in time for a spot of winter weather. The MT500 from Endura has since its introduction been a favourite among those who battle the British elements, and this second generation version – lighter yet still exceptionally weather-proof (MT500 still exists) – retains the qualities of its forefather. You may have seen the main man and Endura ambassador Danny MacAskill sporting it lately…

Dirt’s resident materials expert, Sean White, took a look around the jacket:

Tech and spec

The fabric – this is where they have stepped up the game with ExoShell60.

As before, a 3-ply (layer) fabric. The (Fluoride free) membrane is sandwiched between the tough but light outer shell and the wicking liner. The fabric is super light for a tough 3-ply material at only 105g per square metre. Fully taped throughout for complete waterproofing. This material has an excellent waterproof rating at 18,000mm and ground-breaking breathability of 60,000g/m2/24hrs.

(A typical £50 – £80 jacket would have a waterproofing rating of 10,000mm and breathability rating of 10,000g/M2/24hrs, for example.)

The ExoShell60 fabric is accredited with the ‘Bluesign’ label acknowledging its low-impact environmental credentials.

Additional stretch panels are strategically placed to aid movement on the bike, reducing frustration in tight trail manoeuvres. Longer arms and a good shoulder cut help when you’ve dropped the saddle and heading into the steep stuff. It is here where a proper MTB fit/cut in a jacket of this class in noticeable. The MT500 II is not a road, Commuter Ken or budget jacket.

The MT500 II jacket has Cordura reinforcements on the shoulders to help reduce wear (on a typically high abrasion area) with additional silicone grippers to stabilize a backpack.

The jacket has an ample hood that will cover a proper trail/enduro helmet, giving you full cover in high mountain situations. It has 3D adjustment (via captive elastic and toggles) giving good visibility when on the bike. The hood is articulated so head movement and vision are not impeded.

The high breathability rating is aided by two huge side vents (with 2-way waterproof zips), which are well placed and will operate with a backpack. Front hand warmer pockets are great off the bike but when opened will add further ventilation if needed. A further roomy chest pocket has the usual media port and also a handy ‘goggle wipe’, a nice touch.

Other points of note

As well as the usual adjustments at the wrists they have internal stretch cuffs for added weatherproofing. These also stop moisture creeping up the inner sleeve on truly wet days.

Reliable waterproof YKK front zipper has chunky teeth to resist clogging from grit and mud.

The cut of the jacket is realistic for trail bike use or even a day of wet weather uplifts. It sits well over a baggy style MTB short and is longer in the lower back, but not so low as to catch on your saddle. The front is low enough for full coverage and looks good (normal) off the bike. This cut, along with the hood, adds to the jacket’s versatility (and long-term value) as it can be worn off the bike making it an ideal ‘roadtrip’ essential.

And, if you’re looking for something subtler than the Yellow jacket pictured, there’s a stealthier Black option too.

Summary

With the 4 season wet weather performance this jacket provides, great ‘on-the-bike’ cut, and class leading breathability, the new version 2.0 of Endura’s MT500 comes highly recommended by Dirt. The jacket sits close to the body but far from tight; it doesn’t hinder movement. The details are all well thought out and this is a good evolution from Endura’s well-regarded first version. A jacket that is a true ‘refuge’ when it all turns nasty out on the hill, yet makes a go-to favourite for wet days off the bike. A true investment for your kit bag…
