With Renthal’s UK made lock-on grips being a true hit with riders we’re intrigued to see what thEy have been working on – enter the Traction grip – just how much tech and detail can you pack into a grip?

We took a look at the new Apex and Integra 35mm bar clamp options and wider Fatbars when Renthal launched them last month. These subtle tweaks and improvements are typical of the development process that this British brand put into their new products and now they have turned their attention to the third component of the mountainbike cockpit – the grips. Although there are plenty of grips on the market to choose from (including the recently introduced DMR Deathgrip), we get a bit fussy with our contact points and therefore only a few hit the spot and make it to our Dirt 100 selection.

The Traction grip has been developed for extreme conditions and for those that want additional mechanical grip. Renthal still follow the usual format – with an overall length of 130mm and a usable grip area of 110mm these dimensions should suit most riders. They have stuck with double lock-on collars for extra security (we now tend to favour grips with single collars) and there are plenty of riders who still prefer them – check out our bike check with Brandon Semenuk. They are a grip that will cope with the nastiest of riding conditions.

FORWARD FACING RAMPED FINGER RIDGES

When pulling back on the handlebars, the majority of the grip and torque is concentrated through the fingers. Forward facing, ramped ridges in the finger area give increased grip when pulling back, yet lay flat in normal riding conditions, for improved comfort.
