NEW – SRAM CODE BRAKES

New gravity stoppers - a favourite gets an update

The SRAM Guide Ultimate, Guide RE and the Avid Code brakes have all scored places in our Dirt 100 selection. The Code DH brake has had a full overhaul and now wears the SRAM brand name.

When it comes to slowing down a bike the brakes we often choose are from the SRAM brand. Whether on a trail bike or a gravity orientated DH machine their stoppers have given a blend of power and modulation with the brake lever mounts nicely integrating with SRAM shifters and Reverb lever. The days of unreliability and inconsistent feel of the early Avid brakes are long behind us now – these brakes are packed with SRAM’s latest technology and refinements. With their ‘Bleeding edge’ bleed system maintenance is very clean and straightforward. The Avid Code brake is now a good few seasons old, so SRAM have given this four-pot brake a full redesign. We’ve always loved the combination of a Guide lever on a Code caliper, and with the impressive performance of the Guide RE brake on e-mtbs we feel that this new DH brake will be an impressive piece of hardware.

HERE ARE THE DETAILS FROM SRAM’S PRESS RELEASE:

“Fast enough to win a downhill World Championship, or tackle the biggest alpine descents”

The impeccable combination of power, modulation and consistency introduced in
the SRAM Guide brake series has made converts of some of the world’s best downhill racers. But there’s an increasing need for more power and more control,
as the definition of “possible” continues to change. The all-new Code brake is purpose built for high performance, heavy-duty applications. Based on Guide architecture, Code’s fluid reservoir and pistons are bigger. The new Code is designed to deliver massive power, predictable modulation and incredible heat management for braking control on the longest descents and under the burliest loads.

CODE RSC

Code RSC is built from the elements that made Guide a benchmark in contemporary brake design and performance, and delivers an extra 15% power to shine in all heavy duty applications. SwingLink and Lever Pivot Bearings ensure a smooth and progressive feel at the lever, while the additional 30% positive fluid volume ensures consistent performance even when braking harder, more frequently or with a heavier mass to slow down. We have a set of these RSC brakes to test – stay tuned for our feedback and test notes.

SRAM TECH TALK – AN EXPLANATION

BLEEDING EDGE

Bleeding Edge technology makes bleeding brakes quick and simple. An updated fluid path and bleed porting make it easier to push fluid through the caliper. A dedicated bleed adapter plugs into the bleed port and seals the system to minimize air contamination and fluid loss.

DIRECTLINK

SRAM’s DirectLink lever design produces a solid, positive feel the second you squeeze the lever to engage the brake. It offers a no-nonsense solution to give you precise control.

EXPANDABLE BLADDER

SRAM’s new brake lever design includes a reshaped bladder that helps regulate and reduce air bubbles. The result is improved back pressure relief, which produces dependable braking power and consistency.

REACH ADJUST

Brake lever fit and feel is a personal thing. Reach Adjust makes it easy to adjust your lever for maximum one-finger control for everyone, regardless of hand size.

SWINGLINK

Squeeze a SRAM brake lever and you notice it immediately. Less deadband. More positive pad engagement. Many brake systems minimize deadband – but at the cost of modulation. SwingLink solves that with its special cam shape. When the pads contact the rotor, power is modulated, avoiding that “on/off” brake feel. It’s the perfect balance of power and precision.

CONTACT POINT ADJUSTMENT

Some people like the instantaneous power of a short lever throw. Others prefer the feel of a longer throw. With Contact Point Adjust, you can pick the position you want your fingers to be in when your brakes are engaged and balance both front and rear brakes to match.

PIGGYBACK RESERVOIR

The PiggyBack reservoir offers a simple, failsafe way to manage brake fluid, and also allows for ambidextrous lever placement—so you can run them moto without hassle.

HEAT SHIELD

The stainless steel heat shield breaks the thermal connection between the pad and caliper body, reducing caliper fluid temperature by about 20°C even in the most extreme conditions.
