Calibre Ladies Bossnut

Calibre continues to set a new precedence in the mountain bike market

Buying a new mountain bike is arguably one of the most exciting things in life and there are stages of making the important decision as to what best to invest your money in. We’re all guilty of it, bypassing the sub £1000 bikes to drool over the top-end trail machines, but by doing this, are you missing out on a pretty sweet trick? We think so…

Calibre Bikes has already made waves in the mountain bike industry with the launch of their £1000 full-suspension mountain bike, the Bossnut. With the Bossnut V2 already in stores, the Ladies Bossnut is now hot on its wheels with a fresh new colourway, and all the little finishing touches to validate its “women’s specific” label. Still retailing for £1000, Calibre Bikes has not only maintained its value for money but dare I say, improved on it.

Ok, so let’s be realistic here. For £1,000, you’re not going to get a flashy carbon frame, a dinner-plate-size cassette or even the luxury of a dropper post, but that’s not what this bike is about. What you do get is a high-quality alloy frame with a carefully thought out geometry, you get a suspension system which works well and a complete build that doesn’t require a great deal of tinkering with.

Specification

You may be surprised at how much you get for your money with the Ladies Bossnut. Starting off with the suspension system, arguably the most important aspect of a mountain bike, this bike comes equipped with a pair of Rock Shox Sektor forks in the front and a Rock Shox Monarch in the rear, both boasting an appropriate 130mm travel.

While we’re used to our one-by drivetrains in mountain biking, the two-by system shouldn’t be snubbed. The 2×10 Shimano Deore drive-train on the Ladies Bossnut offers a wide variety of gears to choose from, certainly enough to get you up and down the mountain quite comfortably.

When it comes to braking power, you want the confidence that comes with a reliable and responsive brake and the Shimano M-series offers exactly that – they simply work!

A tidy Ritchey cockpit sits at front of the Ladies Bossnut with a 45mm stem and a 740mm bar with a 20mm rise.

Women’s Specific

So, what makes the Ladies Bossnut a women’s specific bike? That age-old argument of their relevance still dominates the boardrooms of bike brands and the consumers alike, even us! However, Calibre Bikes has kept the Bossnut geometry the same across their range, and why not? It’s comfortable, it’s well built and you can tell that a lot of care and attention has gone into the futureproof plan for its design. So why fix what isn’t broken?

Saying that, however, the most noticeable differences between the unisex/men’s Bossnut V2 and the Ladies Bossnut are the women’s specific WTB saddle, the Speed She, the minty fresh colourway with a women’s symbol on the top-tube and the lighter tune in the rear shock. Aside from that, it’s the same bike.

All of that for £1000, pretty good, eh? However, the Calibre Ladies Bossnut isn’t just about a stylish and affordable mountain bike, it’s what it means for the future of mountain biking. This bike is wonderfully appropriate for curious new riders, for the budget savvy buyers and well, for anyone really. Having a reliable and suitable mountain bike for an affordable price improves the accessibility into our sport, which means more people on bikes and who wouldn’t want that?
