Trail and Enduro Bikes

YT CAPRA AL COMP

‘the capra is One of the most significant developments in mountainbiking for some time… a bike up for anything whatsoever’ – These were Dirt’s words from one of our first rides on this yt, nearly three years ago now.

YT certainly shook the mountainbike world up with their well executed and keenly priced Tues downhill bike and they did so again with their enduro bike, the carbon Capra, and to a market that was ready and waiting.

Last year we picked the Capra CF Pro Race, built around a sleek carbon frame and dressed with top-drawer components with Fox supplying the forks and shocks – a move away from the RockShox and Bos of the previous year. A year on, and we’ve seen more serious competition, from Europe and further afield, all with their sights on the Capra, a bike that has become an increasingly popular site on the trails, waiting in the uplift queue and at race events. And for good reason.

For 2017 we’ve chosen the Capra Al Comp, a bike with all the pedigree of its carbon framed sibling but in an even more affordable package. YT added the XL size to these aluminium frames before the carbon version and as such, we found the fit to be perfect for our six foot (and taller) test riders. With the fit sorted, we’ve spent more and more time on this bike and now look at it as an almost equal to the carbon Capra.

Yes, this metal framed bike is a touch heavier than the CF models but all the ride dynamics and ability are still there. With plenty of riding time this year on huge variety of well-dialled long travel bikes, we’re not looking at aluminium framed options as a second rate choice. Sure, there’s much to love with these well finished and striking looking carbon bikes but the likes of the Radon Swoop, Orange Alpine and Nicolai/Mojo Geometron have given us a renewed interest.

‘One of the lightest long travel trail/enduro bikes currently available at a price that will almost always get you asking, “what’s the catch?”’

So what makes the Capra AL such a good buy? We know that a direct-sales bike like this will give a lot of bang-for-your-euro when it comes to specification, but three years into the Capra’s lifespan, is it still a benchmark enduro bike?

With a head angle listed at 65 degrees, a 1220mm wheelbase and a reach measurement of 458mm, the geometry chart for the size XL Capra looked promising. With the Comp level aluminium bike weighing in at just under 32 pounds and forks and shocks that looked up to the job this latest offering from YT had all the boxes ticked. And it sure didn’t disappoint.

A fixed travel 170mm RockShox Lyrik leads the charge and is paired with a Monarch Plus rear shock. A great match for the chassis, the end result is a bike with great stability, and incredible handling yet still dishes out a huge dose of fun – just like their CF carbon models. The new XL sizing is good – although many tall riders will feel it a touch small – and for those around the six foot mark is a welcome addition. A 770mm handlebar and 150mm Reverb dropper post are pleasing spec choices, meaning very little (if anything) needs changing.

The arrival of the YT Capra brought in a new dawn to the world of enduro bikes. Great riding, exceptionally well equipped machines at killer prices, with a visual appeal that’s hard to beat. The aluminium Capra continues this theme and this AL Comp model in particular is a winner, a bike up for anything whatsoever.
