Orbea Rallon 2018
One of the hits of the year
by Sean White
It was a class act that simply needed updating. Orbea has been timely in launching the successor to the 27.5" wheel Rallon and this new big-wheeler has been one of the hits of the year for us at Dirt.
The 2018 generation Rallon now sports 29" wheels and all the angles that we’d expect of a flagship 150mm travel enduro bike. The all-new frame involves a one-piece carbon front triangle and the shock is offset to allow for access to the controls and settings. At the back there's a new linkage design based around a classic Four-bar design which gives for a solid kinematic and matches up well with the damper options that Orbea offer on the new Rallon.
'Straight out of the box this bike is a weapon'
Three shock options are available ranging from a Fox float X2 or the X2 coil and also the DPX2 offering a package to suit any preference. It’s low all the way with this 29" wheeled Rallon – bottom bracket, seat tower and stand-over height are all where they should be in 2018, which is refreshing to see as it’s often not the case…
The bottom bracket has two heights (343mm in low and 336 mm in the even lower setting), which also change the head angle - 65.5 degrees in low to 65 degrees in lower.
Straight out of the box this bike is a weapon! Built to go fast and eat up the terrain and even more so in our opinion with the coil damper fitted. Not too stiff, not too flexy, and certainly with no harsh feedback over the high frequency bumps that we often experience with some carbon frames.
There is a real feel of quality to the carbon in this bike with a great balance to the feeling of the chassis. The Rallon’s excellent frame is complimented by the DT Swiss EX1500 wheel set with the 30mm wide aluminium rim giving compliance where needed.
'Not too stiff, not too flexy'
This wheel choice, when matched up with a 2.5" Maxxis Minion front and 2.3" Aggressor rear tyre adds confidence when tracking off camber sections and a big dose of grip in the turns.
There are some great details here too, with the choice of a custom build or colour scheme through Orbea’s ‘MyO’ programme. Adding your personal spec to a bike that has a super stable yet fun ride dynamic makes the new Rallon a very enticing proposition.
The lifetime warranty rounds the package out and shows that Orbea have real confidence in the bikes they build.
