Lapierre Overvolt AM700i (Bosch)
Our pick from Lapierre’s current e-bike range
It’s all about choice when it comes to the Lapierre range of E-MTBs for 2018. With carbon or aluminium frames, 150mm or 160mm travel and a wide variety of specs rolling on 27.5" or 27Plus wheels there are plenty of options
With an all-new longer travel carbon frame e-bike platform due later this year, our pick from Lapierre’s current e-bike range is the 150mm travel Overvolt AM700 – a bike that has won a ‘Design and innovation’ award as well as being a hit in the 2018 Dirt 100. With E-MTBs quickly evolving we are seeing major improvements every year and as a result the new aluminium Overvolt is a slickly designed package with plenty of attention to detail.
Integration is a priority for this French brand too. When it comes to E-MTBs the Overvolt AM700i stands out in Lapierre’s range due to the combination of a proven suspension platform and the latest generation of Bosch PowerTube 500 battery. New on the 2018 Overvolt’s frame is the Bosch Powertube 500Wh lithium-ion battery, which is smoothly housed in the aluminium downtube. It’s easily removable, neat and keeps the bike’s lines clean and uncluttered.
"The Overvolt AM700i stands out in Lapierre’s range due to the combination of a proven suspension platform and the latest generation of Bosch PowerTube 500 battery."
With a lightweight and reliable aluminium frame at the heart of the bike, Lapierre uses its proven OST+ suspension system along with a RockShox Deluxe RT rear shock and the all-new 2018 Pike RC up front. This, combined with a slack 66 degree head angle adds up to a bike which can mix it up in testing terrain. Essentially this is an e-bike version of Lapierre’s much loved and versatile Zesty trail bike.
The Overvolt AM700I uses the new Bosch Performance CX system for the power and for 2018 we see some updates. On the Bosch CX system we see the eMTB mode replacing the Sport mode. This in effect varies the output between the ‘Tour’ and ‘Turbo’ settings. Depending on the pedal pressure the progressive motor adjusts automatically to the riding characteristics resulting in more natural riding sensation.
When it comes to the spec sheet of an e-bike designed for serious trail riding, one area we were keen to check out is the wheelset. Large volume 27x2.8" Maxxis tyres are standard on this Lapierre, specifically a High Roller II up front and a faster rolling Rekon+ at the rear. Both have the Maxxis Exo sidewalls and the 3C Maxxterra compound and sit on 35mm wide rims. It’s a sorted package. On e-bikes comfort, traction and control is a genuine improvement with 2.8" tyres over standard the 27.5" wheels and now we are seeing improvements in the durability and tread patterns we feel that the ‘plus’ size is the way to go for this type of bike.
"In the same way as the regular Zesty trail bike that it’s based on it’s a blast to ride."
Lapierre has not overlooked the details either. A short stem and a dropper post help with control, as do the SRAM Guide RE brakes. A RaceFace Aeffect e-bike crankset syncs well with the 1x11 SRAM transmission and is assisted by Lapierre’s own anti-chainsuck tech that helps in filthy conditions - something we often have to deal with year round here in the UK...
This latest Lapierre Overvolt is bang up to date when it comes to drivetrain, battery integration and design details. And in the same way as the regular Zesty trail bike that it’s based on it’s a blast to ride…
