Fox 36 Float FIT RC2

Playing its part in big-hitting 160mm bikes

The Fox 36 Float FIT RC2 and more importantly its predecessors arrived in 2005, changing the face of trail bikes forever, its 150mm travel meaning bigger, faster, stronger – a fork that could be used for charging downhill like no other single crown fork before it. It has never looked back.

“Was it such a brilliant move? Not really it was just common sense”

Well actually that’s not totally true, it looked sideways for a few years at its weaker yet apparently eminently more marketable stablemate the 34 – but you can read that rant elsewhere.

The 36 has never gone away though, it simply got put on the back burner to the pathetically underpowered early 34 especially when the industry moved from 26” wheels to 27.5” ones. You could get a 160/170mm 36 but only in 26” wheel size when it seemed the whole wide world had moved to 27.5”. The professional team racers complained of the lack of muscle and it was no surprise whatsoever when they finally re-launched the new Fox 36 a couple of years ago.

Was it such a brilliant move? Not really, it was just common sense. Bigger wheels had by now delivered more speed whilst the CTD (climb/trail/descend) system on the 34 chassis although easy to use was pretty crude. The tweakers wanted fine-tuning, they wanted adjustment even if was simply to put some kind of validation on the high price. They wanted air volume reducers like the RockShox Pike, they wanted nice graphics and heritage… all the things the early 36 didn’t have. Apparently.

And Fox delivered. Big style. As robust as any 160mm fork there has ever been, with damping quality that is both muscular and sensitive. It’s a truly a great fork. OK let’s not get massively carried away here, yes the Lyrik is close but what you are paying for is this quite small advantage that the 36 offers. In fact it’s our favourite 160/170mm fork.
