HUTCHINSON TORO 27.5” TYRE

We’ve had a renewed relationship with Hutchinson in the past year and in particular with the latest version of the Toro. A favourite in the past (and a pick in the Dirt 100) we’ve not ridden this rubber in either 27.5’ or 29” sizes – so we were well overdue a test.

Tyre technology has move on quickly and now we are seeing more compound options, tougher casings and three wheel size options. Tubeless is a given with Hutchinson – they were there at the beginning with this, with the heavier UST tubeless thinking – and the manufacturing consistency from their French factory is something their proud of.

What did we say first time around?

“If you’re faced with intermediate conditions then these are tough tyres to beat. They manage to dig though the greasy stuff without holding you back when it comes to speed. One of the other things we really like about them though is that they’re available with a ‘Hardskin’ casing which we think is worth the extra weight thanks to the extra stability and cut resistance it provides”

‘Set up tubeless, as an all year round option this version of the Toro is hard to beat’

We focused on testing the Toro in a 27.5” size, as we had plenty of trail and enduro bikes of this nature on test this year. It’s also a go-to wheel size for many riders on trail centres and at bike parks and we were keen to compare this French rubber with our recent benchmark tyres from Specialized, Maxxis, Schwalbe and Bontrager.

The Toro is a mid sized trail tyre with evenly spaced tread, (taller at the shoulder and with a lower height in the central area) and is designed to be run front or rear. Hutchinson’s Hardskin reinforcement sits within the tyre’s 66TPI casing runs from bead to bead and is also available as a double ply (2x66TPI) for tougher trail conditions or rockier bike park use. Size-wise, the Toro covers all bases, (with the 2.25″ and 2.35″ options being of interest to us here at Dirt) are tubeless compatible and available in different compound specs. The tyres we’d choose are the highest spec Toro, aimed at harder trail riding or enduro racing – the 27.5″ x 2.35″ RR ENDURO.

Set up tubeless, as an all year round option for changeable conditions and a variety of surfaces, this version of the Toro is hard to beat.
