Trillion Prime – brand new 160mm British steel hardtail

A stunning debut from Trillion Cycles

Is there anything more British than a hardcore steel hardtail? There’s another new brand keeping up the tradition that launched yesterday at the London Bike Show. Meet Trillion Cycles and their first foray into mountain biking with the Prime hardtail.

Hailing from Leamington Spa, the brand made their name with fixie bikes built for zooming round city streets. Thankfully there’s nothing hipster about these rides, steel, 160mm, big clearance and big attitude bikes makes us sure they will be a hit with the British market.

These guys also aren’t a cottage industry style set up though. They have backing from the Liberty Group (who just bought out Tata’s UK operation for £100 million) with the idea of bringing more quality bike production back to the UK. This means their frames are designed, cut, welded and painted all in the Midlands.

The Prime is their first mountain bike. It’s built from Reynolds 853 steel, has slack and long geometry (we should be getting the exact figures later today) and clearance for up to 3.0″ tyres.

Using a direct sales model, customers will be able to spec it to their hearts’ desire. The model we saw came with a Fox 36 fork, an Eagle drivetrain and a Transfer Dropper, it did  admittedly come in at over four grand but much cheaper builds will also be available.

This is an alpha prototype and we’ll hope to get a beta version in for testing in the near future. As for Trillion, don’t expect them to stop here. The Liberty Group gives them access to a load of expertise from Rolls Royce to F1 teams and there were already murmurs of carbon offerings coming in the near future.

Trillion are still working refining the finish on the frames and are currently finalising the details of who within the Liberty Group will be doing the final fabrication (although it’s likely to be some top-notch aerospace bods). In the meantime, these alpha prototypes are being used to test out the initial geometries and component fit.
